I have two new rooms to floor, one is 3.4m x 3.75m the other (a bathroom) is 3.4mx 3m.

I would like to have a real wooden floor (the rest of the house is very old and has some great flooring), I have priced up reclaimed boards but they are silly money. I therefore wondered if any of our friends in the trade could help?

TIA

If there's someone here, you have two potential customers!! But you'll have to get a move on cos' I'm buying at the weekend!!

David, if no one comes up trumps, Costco in Thurrock are doing real wood flooring at about £22m2. It's good stuff too - not a thin bit of real wood stuck to a bit of crappy pine!!

Make that 3 potential customers! We are in the process of buying a warehouse conversion which needs wooden floors laid throughout.

I recently had kitchen and Dining Room done - French oak (solid). Company took up all old rubbish on floor, put down a DPC, latex, battons, and finally the boards. I also have some laminate oak flooring in house as well.

The quality and feel of the real wood is far better than the laminate.

The cost for the real wood came in at around £60 per meter. Company was called Elite Flooring (based in South East) Can dig out number if required....

Does that price include fitting?

Yup - although after having had a chat with other half, it came out at around £65 per meter - fitted. However there was a hell of a job getting rid of cork tiles which apparently were 'welded' to the floor...so that pushed the price up a little. They did an excellent job - including skirtings and some other stuff as well...

Please can you dig out the number? Sounds very reasonable. What type of wood do they supply?

I might get some from these people

www.btfltd.co.uk/characteroak.htm

If you look at some of the pictures in here

www.btfltd.co.uk/gallery.htm

the top right picture is the characteroak

Pretty reaosnable price if I fit it ontop of the existing floor it will be pretty straightforward.

It should come in at about £150 per room less than recalimed wood.

Turns out my friend left the company.

I cannot personally vouch for them...

If anyone finds a good company let us know !
(I'm due to get new flooring in 4 months)

I believe they charge £10 per sq m for installation and do both solid wood floors and laminates.

Spoke to Andy today. I must say I was very impressed. He certainly knew what he was talking about and seemed very nice. He quoted £80 - £100 per m2 - are you sure yours was £65? Thanks

If you just need the wood, you can pay as little as £25 to £35/m incl VAT. I personally wouldn't want to be paying £65 fitted on this basis.

I was told that the price of the oak was approc £38 m2, and the rest of the cost was for the fitting, varnishes, sanding, batons etc. The complete job will take approx 2 weeks to complete.

Our price was based on confusion (as in constantly changing our minds) negotiations (as in 'ummming and ahhhing' and suggesting a lower price would really help) and having a trade link to him - he came through a third party builder friend - and so we got a 'good price'
