For all you electricians out there.

Heard a rumour that from the 1st January, homeowners will not be able to work on their home electrics, but are going to have to get an electrician round, to move a cable etc... Is this true.

Is there a course/training that you can attend, in order to 'get round' the f**kin stupid law.

I think it only pertains to the serious stuff - you can still work on spurs etc.

Kojak, if you're really interested, you can visit www.odpm.gov.uk, look under the building regulations section for "Part P". This will give you the full scope of works that can/cannot be undertaken without requiring certification. Enjoy.

as simpo says, it only effects serious stuff. IIRC you can still go ahead and do the big stuff yourself if you get it inspected by a local council building inspector, or a qualified electrician. Seems to me the media jumped on what is basically a fairly harmless proposal and started yelling "nanny state". Having said that, the injury rate from DIY electrics is pretty small any way ...

to self certify your own work you would have to do as electrians do and join one of the appointed regulatory bodies, pay the enrollment fees, inspection fees, then annual membership fees or another way is to ask building control to inspect but they will contract it out a third party for a fee of course
