Ok, new Ltd Co. start up thats trading already is looking for a good accountant, in the Manchester/Lancashire area.

Can I get any advice on the questions I need to ask, before deciding on an accountant and indeed does anybody have any recommendations in the aforementioned area?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

No info' on accountants up in that part of the world but e-mail me and I can suggest the type of things your accountant should be advising you about.

I know a brilliant one who I've used as an accountant and auditor for 20 years.

Try Tony Hull, or his daughter Cath Hothersall, at Hull & Co, Beech House, 23 Ladies Lane, Hindley WN2 2QA. Tel 01942 737375.

He's not expensive but also a great lateral thinker, sadly lacking with many accountants.

Hope I'm not braking any rules here. I have no involvement with his company other than being a client and, I hope by now, a friend too!

Thanks Guys,

Eric YHM.

Davel, got your e-mail and thank you for the recommendation. I'll approach your "friend" in due course, hopefully after hearing back from Eric.

Thanks once again.

Thanks Eric,

For your most comprehensive e-mail.

I will be sure to discuss all these points with the accountant and I may even give you a call if necessary.

Thanks ever so much once again.

And just to gate crash the thread, any recommendations for accountants in the Kent area, sole trader accounts.

Eric any chance of publishing those recommendations/questions to ask.

Cheers, John

Look up the yellow pages. "Good accountants" are next to "Flying pigs".

jqmadkit - the e-mail I composed is quite long - and relates to limited companies and directors rather than sole traders. If you e-mail me I could do an amended version for you.

I've never met my accountant face-to-face and only occasionally talk to him over the phone, using mainly email for correspondence.

In this day and age this really isn't a problem.

His firm is www.garbetts.com, I've been using his firm for over 5 years and he was recommended by my (now) brother-in-law who has been using him even longer.

Charges are very reasonable, he's a Certified Chartered Account and Registered Auditor, is very clused up on IT Conracting, IR35, Section 660a, etc. and his standard charge includes company accounts and personal returns for the director and their spouse (provided the spouse has simple returns, but since mine doesn't we pay a little extra to get that included).

Chrages are well below average and service well above average.

I'd thoroughly recommend him.

Try M J Forshaw, based near Ormskirk. 01704 896120. Recommended by several people I know.
