I know it has been done to death, but my requirement is a little different.

I run a trade B2B Wholesaler and am looking to offer a credit card service to new customers wilst reducing my risk.

All the banks have either high startup costs or stupid rental and non useage fees.

Anyone know of a internet 'virtual terminal' service with the holy grail of low start up fees, commission rates that doesnt need the client (pay-er) to be a member.

Paypal gets close, but you have to be a member unless I am missing something. Even if you send out a 'request money' email I think you have to register to be able to make the payment.

What thought oh source of all knowledge (AKA Pistonheads forums!)

Have a look at www.nochex.co.uk/

It's probably aimed more at the casual transaction (ebay) kind of people rather than businesses, but worth a look. I've used it as a consumer to pay by credit card and it was very easy, didn't require registration and I didn't incur charges.

Sam's right. The costs and overheads for Worldpay aren't prohibitive. £200-£300 to get started and overheads that aren't prohibitive. It's a more professional interface for your customers too.

Sorry, I though I had typed that it is not going to be for purchases made over the internet.

Telephone or mail order only, customer not present, take credit cards rather than wait for a cheque to arrive and clear.

People use Worldpay for this. Not sure if that's how Worldpay intend but it is done.

I use www.protx.com for all of my clients - you just need an internet merchant number from your bank and then pay either a fixed fee of about 10p per transaction with no monthly cost or setup fee's, or £20 a month flat fee with no transaction charges at all.
Your bank will charge you a small percentage for receiving the money, but this is typically between 1-2% so much better than the 5% Worldpay and co like to charge.

The funds are also in your account within 48 hours, again, much better than the 6 weeks+ some companies hold your money for.

If you need help with this please feel free to email me.

Cheers

Chris

Just thought I would mention, you no longer have to be a PayPal member to make payments to a person using it. You still have to be a member to set up a monthly subscription, and I think to ake paments over a certain amount, but they have recently opened it up so anyone can pay you on your website using it.

Vex, sounds like what you need is World Access from WorldPay ( www.worldpay.co.uk/sme/datasheet.php?go=ds_worldaccess ) - it's just a simple web page that you type in the customers card details while on the phone to them or from fax or postal orders. We use it and it's very simple BUT you have to be a WorldPay Direct customer as they do not offer the World Access as a stand alone package.

I'd be interested to compare the 'standard' system of accepting credit cards (ie being a merchant) versus these internet-based ones.

As a merchant with A&L I pay 3-4% commission per transaction (customer not present) and no monthly fee. Would I be better off dumping them and using an internet provider?
