Private IT quotation
Discussion
My other half is in IT and has been asked to quote for a private job -advising on systems needed and setting up a home computer network for a friend of a friend and his family. He also needs to provide a costs estimate for materials and his own time. Does anyone know approx what he should be quoting for his labour? Thanks.
Tell him to be careful as these things can sometimes end up taking far longer than initially thought as people have a habit of taking the pi** a bit.
If it was someone I know then I'd do it for beer/wine or whatever they could do for me.
If it was for a friend of a friend I'd want cash and would price it as if it was normal work

remember that they will expect him to be technical support for the rest of his god given existence - available wherever and whenever something happens.
"You couldn't just...."
"While you're at it..."
"Could you just pop round and..."
"Sorry to phone you so late, it's just that..."
'How easy would it be to...'
Whilst my PC was built by a friend 3 years ago(AMD Athlon 1800+ and Asus mobo) it's remarkably trouble-free and when I do have the odd question, I have 3 gurus to share the load. So I do what I can to stop being a pest!
Similarly, I find myself answering questions from other, less tecchy friends when they get stuck - so it's a sort of cascade effect.

It's amazing that because you "work with computers" you obviously understand every area of IT and are capable of building machines from spares and installing all the latest software etc (because you must have the discs somewhere...)

No I don't know a thing about your graphics package, no I can't network your toaster and unless you want to pay me ridiculous sums for installing an ERP system in your home, I won't be coming for sunday lunch with free support for dessert!

repeat after me "I will not NOT do IT jobs for friends"
So, so, so, so true
Expect that 8am call ... "I ran an attachment and it's sending emails to everyone in the UK, plus it's deleted all my files .... can you come over and sort it RIGHT NOW!?!"

I would say it depends on what this Friend of a Friend does.
I always like to do 'favours for favours' when it comes to our of hours work.
Totally down to what line they are into tho.
Definitely not a favours for favours situation unfortunately. He's a permy IT person (although a contractor in the past) so no idea what he would charge for a commercial job either! Doubtful if there would be any ongoing support given the nature of the relationship.
