I have a monthly standing order on a EUR account.

I also have a GBP fixed term deposit with the same bank.

This month there was not enough cash in the EUR account to cover the SO. The bank have gone and paid the SO out of the GBP fixed term deposit instead without even asking me. Can they do this?

I would rather them have contacted me and I would have delayed the SO until some cash hits the EUR account.

The bugger is I can’t pay the cash equivalent back into the GBP fixed term deposit once I get cash in the EUR account because it’s a closed deal that you can’t add to once it’s opened until it’s matured.

I think that's called sweeping; it must be a feature of that account. Whilst it's bolloxed you up in this instance, banks normally just send you overdrawn and then charge you a massive fee for the honour - so in one way you were lucky I think!
