Any recommendations for obtaining a decent phone? I don't need a phone system but would like something with a few more bells and whistles than the almost bakelite item I'm using currently Choice seems to be very limited from the searches I've done online so far.

From my experiences I would recommend a DECT wireless phone that incorporates:
- digital answerphone (doesn't use tape for outgoing/incoming messages)
- speakerphone/hands free: lets you use it as a conference phone.
- the wireless bit so you can conduct business from the garden/living room/bedroom.

I've had a BT Synergy 2150 for three years but that's probably old hat by now - seems to do the job OK though.

Edited to add: got mine from Carphone Warehouse.

Cordless isn't a high priority for me. If I can't get to the phone then it goes to the answer service anyway. I don't want to be too connected I don't need an answerphone built in either.

Main priorities are

good handsfree/speakerphone thing
A decent selection of pre-programmed quick dial thingy buttons
Caller ID might be useful

Doesn't seem to have speakerphone, but is still a masterpiece.

As far as i'm concerned, you realy can't beat a BT handset for functionality. www.shop.bt.com/invt/009943#

Ted, If you have ISDN consider the top one on this page. It's rather good.

We use Philip Onis 200 dects which work fine. Have hands free, voice mail and you can transfer calls between handsets.

I would like to second this. Had them in the house from long before I was born and they are fantastic. They might have reputation for being style over substance but they really are fantastic phones.

a fellow appreciator of all things B&O They are top phones - I have the cheapy BeoComm DECT jobb ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14414&item=6308947078&rd=1 ) One of those in fact, and to my mind it is the best cordless phone on the market - and has loads of functionality - caller id, big EASY to use phone books etc

I know your after a system, but do take a look at www.callagenix.co.uk - they provide my 0870 number for free, redirects onto my home line.

They also do some neat switchboard stuff, voicemail, menus etc. Could well be an ideal solution in addition to the phone.

Yes, slight typo in my post... "I know your after a system" should have been "I know your not after a system.."

But anyway, useful site with some good products.
