I did a technical analysis course at Stern when i lived in NY.
This was the course book we used.

I tend to back technicals up with fundamentals before i jump in, momentum seems to be one of the major factors influencing equities as far as I am concerned.

too true...I think he had the right idea...but comedy isn't the only medium where timing is important.

you can read till the cows come home. too much analysis leads to paralysis.

i recently bought over a million shares in Parity (stock symobol PTY). hold on to them for a while and you'll do alright.

here endeth the lesson.

you bought parity too? sucker! no not really. first reason was they were going through a rights issue and i made a 25% cash return immediately without it effecting my investment capital.

secondly as far as i am concerned the market in this sector has been artificially hammered in the same way that they were artificially inflated a few years ago.

also with regards to dividend payments, my guess is in a year or so once they return to decent revenues and profits, the payments will be a penny or so per share - ie a 10% return on the current share price. this is a good return in any market.

i see the price rising to 2 or three times the current value in a relatively short space of time (my timescale is based on years not months or weeks)based on my guestimates for revenues and profits. in the end all shares are a gamble, follow no scientific rules and therefore you have to go with gut instincts. which is what i have done. i also work in the same market so have a good understanding of what is going on in my sector!

i could of course be wrong, but hey, if you don't take gambles in life what sort of life are you living?

if it works out i'll be paying off my mortgage and buying a decent car too...

why did you buy?

From looking at your profile it looks like you have a decent car already! lol

I guess i bought PTY for much the same reason as yourself added to the fact that they never performed during the market rally last year so hopefully could be getting in towards the bottom.
I imagine sentiment towards the company will take quite a while to turn after what happened at their dutch unit and the resultant rescue rights issue but once they can show that they have turned things round, which seems to be happening now, then a rerating could well be on the cards and a much higher share price.
My portfolio is full of speculative shares as i prefer aggressive investing and this one i'm conviced has a risk/reward ratio worth taking a punt in.

Quite. I thought I'd wandered on to the Motley Fool boards by mistake. Paul, I'm moving this thread onto the Business forum, although I think clubsport may have given you a good place to start.

Hi roadrunner,

There are a few ideas here:

www.citybull.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30280&highlight=book

Can probably dig out some more suggestions if need but they will tend to be pretty dry, mathmatical papers and for them to be of real use you needed to have got to the point of chosing which mystical strategy is the one for you.

Happy to help.

An advanced word of warning if you go down the route of buying TA software:

95% of platforms in the market are a con. This is one of the biggest shyster areas in the market and you need to carry out a lot of research to ensure you do not buy one of these rip offs and bin all your cash to the smarter punters.
