Ok, here goes - i've been working on this website for the best part of the last 5 months! Seems like a long time? Well, i'm not particularly talented in the web design front, and lots of things about it i've found difficult!

I had this idea a couple of years back, and had been putting it off and off for a long time - i'm hoping that people will find it useful.

Anyway, i'd really appreciate some PH opinion - and if you find it useful, feel free to use it!!

The address is www.sitememory.com - let me know what you think!

Mucho gracias,
Marc

It's a little broken in Firefox, the underline after the headings goes through the first line of the paragraph text.

It's the CSS entry for h3

you wrote:

.h3
{
font-size:10pt;
BORDER-BOTTOM: black 1px solid;
color:Blue;
margin-bottom:-18px;
}

but it must be:

.h3
{
font-size:10pt;
BORDER-BOTTOM: black 1px solid;
color:Blue;
margin-bottom:18px;
}

You should use Firefox, because there are lots of web-developer extensions available, such as EditCSS, a CSS editor for on-the-fly-editing (that's how I found above correction in seconds).

Thanks for taking a look, guys! The -18 problem which seems to affect Firefox and Safari was intentional, but it felt like a hack at the time! I think I wanted to reduce the gap between the bottom of the h3 header and the first line of text. IE (ahem) allowed me to use a -ve number, so settled for that

I will see if I can find another way!

superlightr: M5 is ok at the moment, thanks - i'm not using it much, what with working from home and am seeing if I can sell it for a decent price (www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=23860&s=273) but no takers so far

pies: thanks for the encouragement! Seriously can't believe it's taken so long. My original estimate was 3 months! I convince myself that the site could have been released at that point and so technically I made my own deadline. When in reality .......

Thanks once again guys - now, did anyone find the site useful????!!

I've had a play. It's very clever, I'm impressed with the functionality.

Having imported all my bookmarks I'm not entirely sure what it offers me over my standard browser. If I was using multiple computers then it would definitely be of use.

Ahhh - but you are your own boss!! Seems very handy for those of us who are employed.

Its a damn good idea though, hope it works out.

I guess i'd hope the navigation is slightly easier than the favourites menu (especially if you've got loads of nested favourites) and of course there's the sharing of folders, similar sites, etc. But the idea came from helping people with more than one PC, sure.

Lots more coming soon though! I want to do a smaller version so it's more of a MSN-messenger sized popup, and I reckon I can make much more of the 'similar sites' stuff so it picks a smaller number of sites but gives you more info, for example. Also we can do checking of sites to see if they've been updated, with e-mails to alert you, etc.

And .. and .. and ....!!!!

If anyone has any suggestions, i'm all ears! Got lots in the pipeline, but (as usual) the opinion of you guys is really interesting!

Thanks again.

Your Domain Expires in 3 weeks tho (on my Birthday!!!) so dont forget to renew it

And We all know 'proper' businesses Host in the UK

Its nice to see the Web taking off again... I had feared, as many had, that the last 'boom' was going to signal a premature end for us.. but business is going mental.

Heres to another internet Revival.. but this time a Prolonged, sustained industry

Just tinkering now - I've gone via your site to a site I use regularly but it won't let me on as cookie's are disabled. It works fine when I'm not going via your site - is there an option somewhere where I can enable cookies? Or sumfink?

Hi Alan - i'm not quite sure why IE does this - it's blocking cookies from the site. There are a couple of ways of sorting this problem:
  • Lower your IE privacy settings to always allow cookies from that site
  • Remove the SiteMemory toolbar

I'd recommend leaving your privacy settings alone - i'm not really into asking people to faff with their browser settings just so a site will work!

The toolbar is really just a framed page where the top page is really small and looks like a toolbar. It's an easy way of getting a toolbar into IE instead of forcing the user do do a download (which we're planning on later!). If you click on the 'Remove Toolbar' link:

.. it should sort the problem out temporarily.

I'm working on a change now so that you can globally choose whether to have the toolbar or not, and also choose on a site-by-site basis.

Sorry for the hassle!

Nice one, James - thanks very much. Do let me know if there's anything which you think could be changed/etc.

I'm doing a weekly update and am always happy to put customer requests above the rest of the stuff I have on my list!

Futie,

I've been playing with the site too. This bit affects xtr2.net forums link. http://xtr2net.dnsalias.com/xtr2.net/forums/index.php?

It doesn't remember my login. Does the same when I link to this from hotmail too so I guess it's not just sitememory.

When will the fix for this be live?

Cheers

Rob

P.S. Is the M5 still for sale?

All sorted now - and a couple more features added just for luck!
