Can anyone out there advise me please? I have a J reg landrover discovery and the gear lever for the transfere box has worn numbers on the top and i am unclear where it needs to be positioned for normal 2 wheel driving?
I would be very greatful if anyone can advise me on this as finding the original user manual seems to be a lengthy process!

Discos are always in 4WD.

Push it one way and it will be slow, push it the other way and it will be even slower smile with the difs locked and in low ratios.

I think forwards is in low and back in high, but I haven't driven one for a couple of years.

Thank you, but from what i can see there are grooves a bit like a standard H shift gearbox...there is up and down to the left then i think that there are top middle and bottom positions on the right side....(have i confused you)??? I'm generally ok with these things but as you say there's slow and slower!!!!
Does my description help you in any way in helping me?????? I'm really at a loss on this one!

IIRC it's an H shape shift. The top of the H is high range (and correspondingly the bottom is low) and the right upright is with the centre diff unlocked and the left upright is with the diff locked (ie only ever use on very loose surfaces).

Thank you, does that mean that i need to have the lever to the right side on Hi for normal everyday driving?

My memory might be playing tricks, but I thought the top was low range and the bottom was normal. Pushing it to the left engages the diff lock (yellow light on the dash) and the right disengages it.

This is how mine works.

If you can exceed 30mph and there hasn't been a loud bang from underneath it is probably in the right position.

This thread has made my day. Having the same confusion, new to 4x4 and just bought a 98 Disco 1.
No light comes on when I've explored the diff gear stick. I then realised I didn't know where it should be for normal driving .
So, right and down in HIGH it is. Thank you all.
