I'm buying a Land Rover in the next few days, mainly for my expedition manager to visit schools around the UK while I'm away on my next expedition.

Budget is around £7k and it must be a 110. Any ideas/advice?

Would you buy J578 OTT? (two thirds down the page) - www.landrovercentre.com/stock/Defender.htm

Is there anywhere else I should be looking (apart from Autotrader/eBay)?

Also - graphics, we'd want it logo'd up with expedition website address/sponsors logos - any recommendations (ideally in London)?

Cheers

(I know most of this belongs in the LR forum, but there's nowt but tumbleweed in there this morning )

Not sure if it's relevant, but a few years back I got the VAT back on a 110 station wagon as it was classed as a 'minibus'.

The one abiding memory I have is of not being able to do the windows up at speeds over 60 mph - so on the motorway, I'd have to slow down to wind 'em up - then spend the next 2 miles getting back to cruising speed.

Great fun 'off road' in the Highlands mind.

Seems expensive.

Check out LRE forum for their reputation.

I'm tempted to go up to Brightwells - have a look at the auction results. Discos seem to go for silly money, but there are TD5 110s that go through around the 7k mark.

I haven't been there myself, but there have been articles in LRO and that about them.

Edited to say LRE is down at the mo ...

Hmmm, must say it seems pricey, but decent 110's are very hard to come by it seems, so maybe the price is supply / demand driven.
Why must it be a 110 ?

I think the 10 seater landies are exempt from London's congestion charge, provided you pre-register.

If you wait a while (couple of weeks) the new LRO Magazine will be out and there could be some in the classifieds. Just checked this month's mag and there's only two 110's.

The 200 and 300Tdi's are good for about 200,000 miles providing the cam belt has been changed regularly and is kept topped up with oil.

It's a Defender so it'll probably leak . Check the headlining if its a CSW and up around the skylight windows in the roof for signs of moisture etc as you don't want it rotting away.

Chassis, bulkheads, crossmembers etc for rust.

There is/was a nice looking 110 with 95k on the clock at www.hihpeak4x4.co.uk but it was a tad over budget at £8495.

www.landroverman.co.uk may have a couple in stock, they normally have a good selection of 110's.

I will ask around and see if anyone knows of any 110's for sale.

Regarding Vinyls. There is a company near me in Aldershot that does them, I've used them before and they've been great, if you're interested drop me an email and I'll give you their details.

Excellent advice all round - thanks for the advice Graham - I've had a look at LandRoverMan(.com ) have tons of 110s - brilliant!

My stepdad has had several & I drove his 130 crew cab for a while, so I'm relatively familiar with them.

As already said it probably is expensive, but they have to make a living. I went through this exercise last year and I discovered that there aren't actually that many 110 200Tdi CSWs for sale at any one time because they are sought after, and often the private ones sell immediately so it can be hard to find one. I spent £5.5K privately on a very similar 161,000 mile 110 CSW (albeit with standard 11 seats and cubby). But, I've already spent about £1K on it in servicing and maintenance including sorting out knackered suspension, a wiring fault, and overhauling the braking system. There is a price gap between private and retail of course, but retail may have some advantages. It took me about 4 months to locate a vehicle, but that was partly because few Land Rovers for sale are in central southern England.

I drive the 110 about half the time now. It's fun to drive, it does 30 MPG, is quite comfortable and very practical. It's also pretty noisy but the radio is loud enough to overcome it, and you can put more soundproofing in. I haven't registered for exemption from the London congestion charge but only because I haven't sent back the form. I have had 9 people in it when I became the designated driver for Christmas lunch at work. You can get a hell of a lot of stuff to take to the dump in it too.

The only thing I would say about that site was that both times I emailed them about vehicles for sale on the web site, they were already sold, but the reply invited me to phone to see if anything similar was coming in.

I live in Rochdale and Have my landy serviced at the Land Rover centre. They are a very good outfit and will only sell the very best available vehicles. By his own admission he knows his cars are more than others, but if you want a very reliable and trustworthy dealer, then you will be hard pressed to find better.

I bought my landy privately. 95 N plate 300tdi 90 van with all the shiny bits for about the 7k mark (actually 6400 plus a citroen zx diesel)

If you are not comfortable around the oily bit of cars then you could spend a small fortune putting a dodgy car right.

if you want a 110, my experience is that they are a bit cheaper second hand than the yuppy 90. go on the auto trader website very early on a thursday morning and do a national search. you are probably looking at a 200tdi on an k or L plate for that money. with a 110, make sure it hasn't had a hard commercial life.

Make sure you are prepared to travel though, since only the dogs don't sell in the first week of advertising.

Neil.

It was bought by a club member.

Horse in field - barn door wide open. Sorry.

BTW, it should be pounds, not dollars - still got us k/b settings.

I'd agree that for 7k you could be looking at a much newer model than a J plate. I'm just selling a trusty F plate 110 county TD with a few toys, asking 3.5k. On that scale I should have put it at about 5k!!

Mine's a bit old for you I guess, unfortunately! You're better off going for a 200TDi if you can, unless you want mine and another one for wekends!

Cheers,

Andy

PS.

The a/trader website is updated all the time. The mag comes out on Thursdays I think, but if you place an ad, it'll crop up on line as soon as they get around to it. So keep checking!

110 hardtops are plentiful and supposedly the cheapest derivative of Defender you can buy. However they aren't very good for carrying passengers and gear at the same time.

Ben

I'm sure you have already considered this, but have you approached Land Rover directly as a sponsor? If not, it might be worth it, let's face it, it would be good publicity for them.

Best of luck with your expedition.

It may be worth measuring up the back of a csw to see if that fits,i dont thik they have split fold rear seats. You may need a 130

Mine has a kind of split fold, it's 3 seats that fold (nearly) individually. The middle one is held by the others on both sides, so it's more 40/40 or 100! Never actually folded them down though, it's only six bolts to take them out completely, LOADS of room!
Don't think they're standard seats tho.
