My air con on a 96, 4.6 only comes on for four seconds, there are no warnings signs in the display. I have had it regassed, baragin £16. There is a sensor somewhere that cuts it off when its too cold, anybody know where it is ?

Is your outside temperature reading correctly?

It could be one of two things.1.when you had your recharge done to much gas could have been pumped in to the system, the air con system on the range rover has pressure sensor,a build up of to much pressure in the system will result in the compressor cutting off.it only takes a miniscule amount of gas to cause this problem, thats why they have to be filled to exact specifications.2.check the clutch on the compressor its been known for these to stick, removing some of the shims from the clutch plate will free it up.

My outside temp is reading correct. I took it to an aircon "expert" who only did a re gas as he couldnt understand why the compressor only stayed on for 4 seconds, thats to say 4 secs on,turn off, then restart again. It keeps doing this all the time. He says there is a sensor that thinks the temp is down enough to cut it out. I will try 12v to the clutch and see if it stays on.

The outside temperature misreading is a sign that the comfort ecu has failed ... it controls things like the air con pump.

Try the mechanical bits first as suggested, otherwise a quick plug-in to a diagnostic box will tell you which sender has failed.
