I have a Rangie 96 hse and the front nearside track rod has gone a bit "wobbly", i cant get it out of the bar, it does come out? I cant imagine i have to buy the arm as well? Dont want to appear a wally at the dealer so i thought i would do it here.

james here:

They screw out on appossed threads, one end clockwise the other anti.

They are normally tought to get out best technique is lots WD40 and a bit of bar on the ball joint thredded bit the other in a vice and alot of swearing. Bit of heat helps too.

Have fun

Thanks James, i know to keep at it.I have tried the heat and penetrating oil way. I think i will have to remove the whole bar and put it in a vice.

Errr.... no they don't ! The offside of both the track rod and drop link can be removed in the conventional way. The nearside of both is a one piece fabrication and must be replaced as one.

I still have not got round to this job, are we saying the whole thing has to be replaced,ie, the ball joint is part of the long track arm ?

Yes ! Only the offside is adjustable and removable as witnessed by the lack of thread and locknut on the nearside. The whole lot (complete draglink and tie rod)will cost about £180 fro LR dealer. I was lucky as the wear was just on the offside of both so could buy ball joints at £10 each.

James is thinking back to the RR classic where you could replace each ball joint separately from the bars.

Thanks for that. What a great design, i did notice that the off side had locking nuts, idicating they would move. I dont quite understand why my RR dealer didnt advise this though ! It passed the MOT and before i butchered them, would probably go on for years at 3k a year, oh well, got to do it now as there is no rubber left.
