Right.. thoughts needed.

I've recently picked up my Stage 1 Landy. Having gone over it in detail the condition reads as follows;

1 outrigger needs replacing rest of chassis okay in need of a waxoyl

both footwells needs replacing

new exhaust(already doing)

New ignition HT etc (Done)

cosmetic repaint and seat replace

new springs and shocks

new gearbox needed

I know it sounds alot but I recon I can do most of it and/or get it done for £1200.

The motor would therfore have cost £2100 in all but would be mint origional Stage 1 with verified 40K mileage MOTs back to 1990 and a very rare LT95 rangerover overdrive (worth about £500 on it's own)

So what do I do keep it and spend the money or sell and get a better motor thats aready done. My only thought is whatever I get I'll end up spending money on it so if it's one I've done I'll know how good it is.

Any thoughts

Go for it! Good original examples are rare, and most of the repaired ones are not very good due to owners mostly didn't want to spend much money on a relatively cheap car.

btw. did you do a sound check, without rear silencer, when you had changed the exhaust?

He just did about half an hour ago, whilst I was in the garage. was it loud or was it loud. Sounded like a drag car

Keep it.

Did the same to my Rangie, spent loads over a couple of years but knew what I'd got when it was all finished.

You gotta keep it Sir Fish!

Stage 1 v8's are like gold dust!

Its a few years since i knocked about with landrovers, but i can sometimes still remember stuff, at least you have knowledge of the v8.

If i was spanner compitent with a place to do the work then a V8 would have been my first choice. A Stage 1 would have been a bonus. for me these vehicles have so much character, i love them but knowing you did all the work yourself would be brilliant.
I believe Bangernomics had/has a stage1 and i think there is information about it on his homepage.
Maybe contact him - even if it's just to compare decibel levels

Well, it looks like its staying. He was working on it the best part of the day yesterday. He came in with a big grin on his face and said he was as happy as a pig in shite.

Keep it Fish, you know it makes sense.

Sodbury sort out is at the Newbury Showground, just off junc 13 of the M4.

The annual shows are good for parts, LRO show is in Sept, you've just missed Billing last weekend which is the largest. Bloody good fun....

having owned several landrovers and therefore been a target for other owners less mechanical than myself i can honestly say they are absolute crap! i have a file of receipts for parts approx 3inches thick! i could quite happily purchase a d8 and push every single one into a large bonfire and grin whilst they burnt! absolute rubbish! edited to add if someone would like to help i may run to a pair of d8s

Westy,

Thanks for a useful and constructive post.

LandRovers are similar to TVRs in that there is always some bad press, a small percentage of which is justified by poor quality control. However a lot of the problems are down to people cutting corners on maintenance etc.

And for every disgruntled owner there are many happy owners who just don't tend to post "car went well this week - no problems"

Thanks for the offer however I was thinking of keeping it reasonably origional and I already have a new exhaust for it. The clearance is also quite tight.

Does anyone know who does the LPG tanks that are like a Landy side tank that can just be bolted under the drivers seat?

Also I'm going to take the restrictors out the engine I know where they are etc but does anyone know how much difference they make to the power from the standard 93bhp????
