Hi, I have now ironed out most of the usual faults that inflict the P38 but have identified a problem with the interior lights.

Symptoms; Interior lights stay on all the time if the bulbs are put back in. The map lights operate via the switched no problem but the courtesy lights do not go out at all. The previous owner must have been aware of this problem as the rear bulbs had been slid along, thus they were not making contact and the front bulb had been removed. The only info. I have seen through my searches advises me to press and hold the centre button and await the beep/screen instructions but nothing seems to happen when the button remains depressed. I have tried locking the car... they stay on, waiting for ages for them to dim and turn off .... they stay on.... ! The only answer at the mo is to remove the bulbs and feel my way in and out of the car !

In the past I would have traced this to a faulty door pin/light switch but I am guessing this is all part of the lock/catch mechanism on the P38 ?

Any ideas.suggestions would be very much appreciated...

Thanks in anticipation.

What year Range Rover?

I can look at a schematic for the interior lights on Monday at work if needed.

My first guess would be to find the 'lights out' delay relay and replace that. Unfortunately I can't remember whereabouts on the car it is! Probably in the main fusebox under the bonnet.

Firstly, thanks for your responses.

The car is an early one, 1994 P38 4.6 HSE. If you, (Trooper2) can come up with anything that would be great. And GKP's suggestion of a relay sounds quite possible. I will have a poke around today but all I have is the owners manual which may not go into enough detail.

I'll update you if I work it out, but if I don't post anything later today that means I am still at a loss (in the dark so to speak!)

Cheers, Adi.

RR 4.6 HSE
Mercedes Cosworth (a nice one)
Yam FZR1000 EXUP
Yam TDM 850
Mini Cooper
Volvo 3.0 24v (cos I needed an estate car)

799boy, I didn't get a chance to look at a schematic today but I did talk to one of our Land Rover techs and he said, If you open the driver's door and the front and rear wipers stop working then it's most likely the driver's door switch that is at fault. If they still continue to work then you would have to undo each door's latch connector with the courtesy lights/ illuminated until the lights go out and then you have found the bad switch or connector.

If the door latches have more than one connector then the smallest connector (2 or 3 wires) would be the one to disconnect for your checks. I will get to work early tomorrow and find the proper schematic book as 3 of them were not marked as to which year Range Rover that they covered so I didn't know which to look at.irked..

I repaired a Jag X-type the other day that the hazard lights were on continuously and I traced it to 2 of the 3 wires in the connector at the hazard switch touching and sending a ground signal to the body control module, so the module turned the hazards on no matter what position the switch was in, I think you are probably dealing with a similar situation, but I will know more when I can see the proper schematic for your vehicle..

Thanx for that. I will wait to hear from you before attempting to diagnose it myself. Cheers.

799boy please bare with me, I work on the Jaguar side of my dealership- Jaguar/Land Rover Colorado Springs and our Jag Master Tech gave notice so they have had me (fresh out of Jag school) Shadowing him to learn from him as much as I can. Today was his last day so I should get a little breathing room soon.

799boy, Thank you for bearing with me.. Email me though my profile and I'll reply back with some schematics that should cover your interior lighting concern. If you need help reading them once you get them, post here or Email me, thanks again for your patience!

I'm supposed to be a Jaguar Apprentice Technician but since the dealers Jag Master Tech left, I've been thrown into the fire..hehe

I'm pulling the transfercase and transmission on an X-Type currently and they don't usually start newbies out with heavy line........It's good I have some talent..hehe
