Older enthusiasts may recall that back in the seventies and eighties Volvo drivers had a bad reputation. Volvo had done a big marketing campaign on the strength, solidity and safety of their cars, starting with the 240 series and going into the 740 series. It seemed this reputation was held all around the english speaking world, and held equally between car enthusiasts and bikers alike. These Volvos were also as far away from being drivers cars as you could get.
Basically, Volvo drivers could be split into two camps: the timid driver, who who felt that their lack of skill could get them into an accident and who wanted protecting as much as possible, and the bullying driver who felt that the strength of their car would keep them safe if and when they did shunt another motorist off the road.
Volvo have lost this image now I would say, for two reasons. Firstly, the company have moved well away from the dire driving experience that the 240/740 series gave, and secondly all the crap drivers who would have previously bought a volvo have emigrated to 4x4's. Now, I am not for one minute saying that every 4x4 driver is a plonker, that would be ridiculous and patently untrue. But I do feel that the majority of crap drivers *who can afford to run one* drive a 4x4.
I know this is a sweeping generalisation, but I do feel it is generally true. I am not one for making generalisations, I do like to keep an open mind about things. But when I find I keep seeing or experiencing bad behaviour, and you start to see a pattern emerging due to the amount of times you experince a certain situation, and you know that 4x4s only make up what, 10 or 20% of traffic, there comes a time when you have to say, "hold on, there's something going on here".

Thats from the thread that is discussing the article "all 4x4's are a menace because they have RSJ's for A pillar's", yea?
I started reading this but glazed over after a while. Interestingly there was an article in the Times Newspaper on Monday, (it may have been a sunday paper i forget) that was burried deep in it, (i was bored on a eurostar) that showed that a government investigation had proven that this was a load of big hairy ones, and that the Yaris, Corsa and Clio were actually the worst offenders. Also that many 4x4's were actually significantly better as they use stiff ladder chassis.
his comments on volvo drivers are interesting. My dad used to drive volvo's ... 244 and a 760 as daily drivers in the 70's and 80's because he did stupidly high milage and they were comfy. Never has he ever had a desire to own a 4x4 himself (although he quite likes my rangie)
his driving credentials include some successfull saloon car and rally cross racing and many auto cross trophies in the past, and a very eclectic historty of "toy" cars.
anyway i am rambling ... and i digress, this is probably because i dont want to get drawn in on the 4x4 thread itself as i will only get stressed!!

Probably wise not to look at it, I left it in the end, as lets face it debating with someone that is so biased and blinkered against 4x4 vehicles, that makes illogical irrational pathetic comments with no substance whatsoever is just a waste of time! I just cant understand what right anyone thinks they have to tell others what they should or shouldnt drive!! Especially when they drive an old VW Bora, an old mx5 and an old MG what the F8ck does he know about cars anyway?? I hope he got them all for free, I would hate to think someone actually bought that collection of crap
