Have a look at these photos of a near miss. eek

My Landrover 90 Utility 300 tdi 1996 has a set of Colway AT 235/70/R16 's fitted.
The uniformity of the tyre became seriously impeded on the way back from Hereford on Sunday on the M25.

The tyres are Q rated [ up to 100 MPH ], the 90 only does 80mph
The tyres are less than 6 months old, never been off road.
Colway tells you that remoulds are really great, and oh so safe, and that they are covered in approval marks etc etc.

Never seen a tyre present itself like this.
Disintegration of the new carcass.

Ive spoken to the company, and sent a few e mails, but I'm just a punter who they can ignore, and thats what they've done.
They are seriously under-estimating manufacturers liability, one good claim will kill them dead. Ive informed them that there's a problem, so in effect how they react to it will come under scrutiny at investigation.

Ive informed VOSA and they have forwarded me a vehicle safety defect form to fill in.
Simply done online.
If you've experienced similar with a Colway tyre, especially of the same size, get in contact with this guy at VOSA.

Paul.Taviner@vosa.gov.uk

What is your experience of Colway, any comparable disintegration ?
Im off to get some decent tyres that are all made at the same time, and don't fall to pieces.
eek

Check the other tyres carefully to see if they are on their way out? don't let anyone have them until it's sorted

Ive just had an e mail from the Managing Director of Colway Tyres Gary Oliver, and spoken to him on the phone.
He has offered a full refund on the affected tyre, and would like me to send him the pictured one, and one other that doesn't look right.

TBH I'd want my money back for the set. Then buy real tyres.

[cynic]

Trying to find out the real problem or buying up the "evidence"?

Do not get rid of the evidence!!!

Wait until the VOSA have had a look, I'm sure these have to be DOT rated & I assume some sort of testing is involved

I've a set, in the same size, on the Rangie; bought after much research and recommendations. They get used on and off road, and have proved extremely capable in the mud, and decent on tarmac.

I'd like to think your experience is a one-off (though Colway's attitude is unacceptable), but will follow this thread with interest.

I am really disappointed in Colways response.

Colway have been able to get a full understanding of the tyre failure from a jpeg, unbelievable.

Their e mail:
The fact that both of these tyres have performed apparently satisfactorily
for some of their expected lives infers the tyres had no inherent defects.
It is common for tyres to sustain damage due to concussion against debris,
kerbs or other obstacles not necessarily with the driver's knowledge. This
damage leads to early failure due to casing breakdown.
Hows does that read considering what they are manufactured for ?

Poor company response, no urgency, and responding to me as if this were a "complaint".

Ive lost confidence in these tyres, and Ive told the company so.
As far as I am concerned I have informed the company, and Dft/VOSA its up to them now

At present would avise anyone of buying them to spend just a bit more to ensure your life, and that of your family is safe.

The old remould story really.

Check yours now.

To be fair to Colway, there was a thread in another forum recently about some tyres on a cerbera.... high performance 130mph+ premium tyres from a major maufacurer.. on the inside the walls were splitting and the tread comming away on two tyres...

So tyre failure isnt unique to remoulds...

I'd say it doesnt matter what tyres you've got you should check them regularly... especially if they are subject to things like off roading or track use....

Sounds like their response was poor though...
