Last night, whilst fighting my way across town after a bunch of people from another country caused congestion by protesting in London about thier own civil war, that and some cretin in City Hall decided it would be a good idea to close Embankment for a party, whilst Strand was down to 1 lane ... and no one thought it a good idea to put any information on the matrix boards coming into town .... sorry ... just needed to get that rant out ... I got a dashboard warning that the "gearbox is overheating" and to "refer to manual". Had a look in the manual for my RR P38 but pish all about gearbox overheating in there.

The circumstances - 3 1/2 hours of "making time" back from the West Country, followed by close to 2 hours of stationary or as near as damn it in town. Once i got out of the traffic and started moving again, the warning switched itself off.

Should i be worried?
Should i be contacting the garage and getting ready to apply the lubricant?

If this is a "lube myself up for a wallet emptying", can anyone recomend a RR LR garage in London / East / South East (coming from Canary Wharf)

Cheers!

The early cars had a level check dipper in the engine bay that you could use to fill too, but this feature was deleted in (I think) around '98. Mainly because it was a good way of overfilling the gearbox by the owner!

If you've got one, it'll be on the nearside (rhd car) of the engine up against the bulkhead. (In a perfect position to spill transmission fluid over a hot exhaust manifold )

I'll have a look, but mine is a 2000 so probably too late, and if it is there, will make sure that its cold.

I just want to check that there is acually some wet slippery stuff in there hehe

Aren't the gear boxes on those a "sealed for life" job?
Other thing to check if there is an oil cooler radiator which is blocked

I've used these guys a couple of times, and have been very impressed.

They're probably an hour or so from Canary Wharf by road, and are located about 5 minutes walk from Broxbourne station, which is about 30 minutes out of Liverpool Street.

cheers ed, bookmarked.

Have poked about under the rangie (jeez they do have seriously big 'boxes!!!)

All looks well, i suspect that it was just throwing its toys out the pram after several hours at 90 followed by several hours on the peddle brake crawling through traffic!!

it'l be due for a service in a couple of thousand miles anyway, and that never takes long to do!!
