Whilst looking for a suitable car for to use in the States, I was amazed to see NAS Defender 90s selling for up to US$100,000 at a US Land Rover dealer yikes

Now I know that as long as its over 25 years old, a Land Rover is exempt from the strict US Department of Transport Import regs. However, fine if you want a series model, but that rules out the coil sprung 90s and 110s.

First question: Were there any coil sprung models pre-1981?

Second question: I heard that particular models from several particular years during the 1990s are able to be imported and "federalised" by an authorised importer subject to certain conditions - that they are left-hand drive for instance - eg: 1993 Defender 110 CSW.

Has anyone any experience of trying to import a newer Landie into the States - is it worth the apparent hassle??

Cheers

Hi.

I dont know anything about importing. But I allways see an ad in most mags for the Land Rover Centre (in Huddersfield i think)

They seem to specialise in importing Land Rovers to the States

Try this: www.landrovercentre.com/usa/welcome.htm

I was just wondering....
If you were to get a hybrid based on a pre 81 rangie, could that qualify under their import rules?

Alternatively rebuilding a pre 81 series onto a Designa chassis (coils with rangie axles) then that's registered correctly in this country.

Now that's complicated things!

We're trying to avoid complication if possible! hehe

At the moment I think that we've settled on getting hold of the earliest 110 possible (1983ish) and spending a year or so restoring it to perfect as a project - possibly with a V8. Then come 2008, it will be able to be imported to the US under their 25 year rule with no problems at all.
