Had thunderstorms and torrential rain for a few hours yesterday. My sister had to go to her mother-in-law, so assuming there was a small bit of flooding at the end of the road, I took her in the 90. Was quite glad I did.
Later on, I had to take my grandma home and on the way back from there, met a couple of Police ladies who were closing the road. Unfortunately a couple of people had tried to get through and got stuck. So I spent the rest of the evening ferrying these two Police lasses backwards and forwards from their car and the other end of the flood.

Reminds me of a flash flood about 5 years ago......a local lane which always gets badly flooded my dad thought he'd tackle in his Rangie rather than turn around. Unfortunaly he went in a bit fast soaked the engine ('93 Vogue SE 3.9 V8 obviously!) and it cut out, wouldn't restart (usual story). Rain was so bad the water ended up over the inside of the seat bases by the time he got towed out, so all the electrics went haywire (seats moving, alarm sounding etc etc) and insurance company wrote it off as a result of so much flood damage. It needed all new seats/carpets/door cases/ECU and countless other bits.
That's quite a flood. Luckily, the 2nd pic was as deep as it got (which isn't really that deep for a LR).
I don't fancy a flood of that size here (it smelt a bit like sewage from where the drains had filled up). I suppose that's the problem with petrol motors...for that reason, I'm glad I got a 300TDi.

hmmmm floods i likes playing in water, mines a 200Tdi btw but i do have a snorkel.
had water up to the door handles & had to wait till i sunk to the bottom to drive out of that one, 8" of water inside after that - speakers at the bottom of the doors sounded funny for days.
Haha, luckily my speakers are up in the headlining. I've not encountered anything deeper than that flood yet. I'm still unsure of what to do about wading plugs and breather pipes actually.
im currently leaving my wading plugs out. the damn thing leaks so much they keep water in.
breather pipes, just run them up the side of the snorkel, should be four of them - two axles two gearboxes.
you see people poke them in the end of the snorkel for neatness, ive heard this is a bad thing as the engine may suck on them & create a partial vacuum which will reduce the seals chances of keeping water out of the unit.

Excellent, sounds simple enough for me. Do you know what size pipes to fit? Would I be better off getting a wading kit from Mantec or something? i think defenders are the same as discos in that both gearbox breathers come up the bulkhead on the offside of the block. your looking for two black pipes about 5mm across with a U-bend in the end.
the front axle one on mine sits lower down on the nearside & i think the rear axle breather just went up the a-frame & stopped near the chassis rail.
i'd also look for a fuel tank breather, if defenders have them. i think i heard some breathe through the fuelcap. i had problems with the breather for the tank hanging down the side of the tank & sucking up dirty water when i was stuck in puddles. tank full of sandy stuff mixed with diesel = what can only be described as 'snot'. blocks the pickup well & i couldnt clear 60mph!
