Hi all, I've never posted to this forum before but was hoping I could get some used Land Rover advise from you all. My 1987 Isuzu Trooper (216,000 miles) has died again and just isn't cost effective to fix at this point.

I'm looking at a used 2000 Land Rover Discovery II with 73,000 miles on it. It appears to have been well cared for and kept clean its entire life. The headliner is starting to sag (I've heard this is an issue) and I've also heard that there is an issue with the plastic fuel tanks?

What else should I be aware of? And how many miles do these vehicles normally reach before they are ready to be retired?

The Used car dealer is asking $11,000.00 for it.

I looked at 3 other used L.R.s this morning for less money but they were trashed.

I'm currently in the Jaguar technicians school here in the U.S. but when I graduate in one months time I while more likely than not be getting hired on at a Land Rover dealership, so parts and servicing will be much less of an issue for me.

Thanks in advance for your input.

the only issue with the td5 tanks is the a169 recall which is where a fuel pipe chafes through, it should of had that done by now. other things to watch out for are, eas problems, oil in the injector/ engine wiring looms and water leaks around the windscreen area. othe than this they are pretty reliable cars

I owned a late 99 DII for a few years and it never gave any trouble (sold at 75kmiles)
Though I did hear early TD5s (pre 2001?) were at risk of head gasket issues (locater dowels were plastic and aged over time allowing head to move?) and there may have a been a recall on the oil pump (fed off timing chain?) failure of which leads to loss of oil flow and knackered engine. There was also an ABS unit recall, mine was done by landrover but I cant remember the details.
The original ECU's were unobtainable during my ownership and if it failed the later types wouldn't work. Dont know if this has been resolved by landrover spares as I sold mine before it became an issue (2 years ago) not that mine had failed but I wanted to know what the options were as I was thinking about getting it "chipped".

Got a 2000 4.0V8 ES7 Automatic done 123,000 miles. Had cylinder heads replaced at 100,000 (radiator caused it to overheat) other than that no problems or major work carried out. Nothing is falling of and everything works. (Probably going to regret saying that now!).

The ACE makes ride pretty hard but the handling is great as a result. Fuel wise I get around 17mpg average, including towing and driving it enthusiastically!
