A '02 plate Discovery TD5 gave me a torrid time on my way home last night on the B3081 from Shaftesbury to Ringwood.
Have to say I was HUGELY impressed by the roadsholding and handling of what looked to be a standard car. Given the turn of pace I'm presuming that it had a Stage 2 JE conversion.
My car is no rocket ship ('03 A3 2.0 TDi) but I was amazed how hard I had to try to shake this guy off....and then to catch him up after he overtook me on a blind bend! (He was hustling along a twisty B Road at 80-100 clicks).
When I finally get around to getting one I won't drive it like that but it's good to know just how well these things can go when you need them to

The ACE system really is fantastic. Teh TD5 even in standard form when bolted to a manual is actually a pretty rapid engine, If you rev it hard enough.
as some one else said the handling of most Landies (possibly disco 1 / RRC and p38's excepted) is actually far far better than people ever expect.
I can torment most things on the road in my td5 90 if I feel like it. (Which i fequently do) Have had some fairly impressive scalps over the last couple of years. (20v fiat coupe turbo and Impreza turbo (with a below average driver at a guess) included.

The thing with discoveries and Rangies is that the road holding is actually very good, and provided you line things up right and dont lift mid bend the stick like anything... the angles they get to can be a bit alarming though !!! and if you do lift on the edge it'll probably go over !!!!
my 03 td5 doesnt have ace but does have the rear air, combined with the je stage 2 kit it is quite rapid, and puts many hot hatches to shame around the twisty bits and im still on 16" wheels.

it certainly wet my appetite for a Discovery again
as I'll be getting an ES, 18" wheels and ACE come as standard
the only question remaining is JE Stage 2 TD5 or V8 and £4k left over for fuel bills!
ultimately, it'll come down to what's available in the right spec/colour at the right time

I have a TD6 Disco3 (HSE with active airspings) and love the torque. Used to think it cornered well also but now brought a 53' M3 which makes the disco seem like the titanic!
No kidding you really feel the weight. Interestingly the TD6 Disco3 seemed to handle better than a 54' Range Rover v8 I tried, don't know why??

ive got a lifted D1 with detroit locker in the back & oversize rubber. ive left a MX5 who was trying hard down a frosty road in the past. the look on his face as i passed him out of a bend in a 4 wheel drift was sooooooooooo worth the effort. just aim the damn thing, hold on & never lift...
