I think I may have found my Series III, but would appreciate a view on what I should offer. It's an ex-MOD 109 that has only ever done 28,000 miles. Chassis and bulkhead seem excellent, no smoke or rattles from the engine and the gearbox and transfer box are smooth. It was a signals vehicle and has been convereted from 24v to 12v (apparently at great expense). The only faults I can find with it are that the tyres need replacing, the door tops are on the way out and the fuel and temperature gauges don't seem to work. The seller bought it from the MOD for his elderly dad to use, but apparently he finds it difficult to drive. Asking price is £2,000 - is this realistic?

Lol, i dont really know, prices seem so varied. There is alot of over and under pricing.
I think if it really is as good as you say, it should be worth £2k, because you can pay several times that getting a seemingly cheap one repaired.

I know that I can get a newly MOT'd one straight from the army for £2k. In some ways though, the fact that this has already been registered makes it a more attractive proposition. Anybody know what the tyres and door tops will cost?

Door tops are pence see here: www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/product_search.asp?catid=3&page=new

Tyres approx 60-7-quid upwards.

I have a set of worn Michelin XYZs (or XZYs I can never remember which) you can have for beer money. They're 7.5x16s so I'm not sure they'll suit an SIII.

Cheers Bill, I'm sure we could come up with an appropriate amount of beer! I'm not concerned with the cost of new tyres, I'm just trying to come up with a realistic figure to offer for the vehicle after factoring everything in. I've just discovered that it doesn't have an unleaded head, so I'm guessing this is another £250-ish?

I bought 4 brand new 7.50R16 XCLs on rims for 150 quid at Old Sodbury this year, which are awesome, or remoulds are fine at the speeds you will be going . From 40 quid each iirc.

I shouldn't bother with the head (unless you want more power at the same time) my series 2 has been run on straight unleaded since 4 star was phased out, with no valve seat problems.

Mmm, power...

Can you really run the old head on unleaded and not expect something horrible to happen?

Well, i dont know anyone who used lead replacement fluids, and nor do i know anyone with valve recession.

Turner Engineering click, they do performance heads for these engines, which have hardened valve seats as standard.

If you can be bothered of course.

That's a bit OTT for my use - I just want a solid old workhorse that's as reliable as possible. If I need an unleaded head I'll factor this in, but if I don't need one I won't get one.

I'm still none the wiser of how much to offer this bloke for the bloody thing!

Offer him £1500. He can only say no, but at least you've started negotiations.

If you don't want to offer 1500 quid, post this chaps contact details here and perhaps someone else will..... //whistlesinnocentlyputtingonbestpokerface//

I don't mind offering him £2k...if it's worth £2k. I just haven't got a clue and can't seem to find anything similar on which to base my approach.

Right, I've sent him an email offering £1,500. If he rips my arm off I won't know whether to laugh or cry!

He has come back with £1,700 - including a new MOT. So I'm going to shake his hand this afternoon.
