due to thier brilliant value now im thinking about getting one, probably around P or R reg, im sick of my current car and have wanted an RR for ages and seeing as how ones with under 100k and some even with LPG can be had for around the £5k mark now it really does seem a good time to buy, originally i was thinking about a DSE but ones with a few miles on can be overworked and thier underpowered, my main question was does the 4 litre suffer the same engine block problems that the 4.6 does? or is it not overbored and the heating and cracked block problems do not seem to occur in these?
The 4.0 suffers the same as the 4.6, as for that matter does the 3.9. It's not a case of bores as the increase in capacity is as a consequence of a longer stroke.
It appears that the problem is to do with lean running in the mid range which is down to the original ignition systems. LR changed the systems in about 2000/01 and it's supposed to solve the problem.
I suspect that although these blocks do suffer you only ever hear about ones that go wrong and internet knowledge then condemns all RR engines as being weak. Bit like the RMS or slipped liner problem with the 996.
My 97 HSE 4.6 had done 106k when I sold it last year and the engine was sweet. The auto box was playing up but no other problems. It had the heater matrix "O" ring problem at about 89k and a new EAS compressor at 95k but other than that it was relatively trouble free for 6 years and 60k.

Go for a 4.6. They're generally better spec that the 4.
I get just over 20mpg out of a 4.6. That's not being particularly light on the throttle, and a mix of town/motorway.
How many miles do you intend to do in it? It is worth considering LPG (though admittedly it'd add another 2k onto the price).
D
there are a few 4.6s with LPG that are available for a reasonable price however the ones that look great seem to all be in a nasty colour or have that tan leather interior which i belive it was a faux pas for Land Rover to even offer.
also to tell the truth if i could get 20 mpg out of a 4.6 i would buy one and drive as is without LPG but when i used to drive one around it was a nightmare 12-14 ,pg at best although i think it may have been running a little rich, it certainly smelt that way.

I used to get about 16mpg from my 4.6. It was a fantastic car (even with the tan leather upholstery that I liked! ) but make sure you check the air suspension - mine developed an occasional habit of dropping to the bump stops in 'limp-home mode' which would cure itself if switched off for a while, it also developed a snag with the air-con when it would decide the ouside air temp was zero degrees and so fill the car with hot, humid air - great in the middle of summer. Both faults were never really sorted by the dealers which was the main reason I got rid of it. Buy carefully and you'll have a great vehicle.
when i used to drive my brothers 4.6 the air suspension would play up ocasionaly, certainly the system on the L322 is a huge improvement, sorry about the tan leather thing it just doesnt appeal to me personally, grey is fine, cream with black piping is great and have even seen a few with black, the 4 litre and 4.6 now seem to be brilliant value even over the DSE which i was thinking about first of all.
Go for the 4.6. Mine is averaging 17mpg in general use which when considering it's size etc. is not too bad.
I am comfortable buying what I consider 'high risk' motors on the basis that they represent such awesome value and to be honest, as long as the basics work, I can live without one or two of the more luxurious features such as heated seats etc. My 4.6 HSE is worth the investment as I have not yet driven a car with so much road presence. Ideal if you live out in the sticks and get a kick out of scaring the living sh!t out of boy racers who think it's their devine right to cut corners on blind bends ! Oh the joy ..!
Depreciation is a wonderful thing, but only if you are on the right end of it, which most of the time I am ! Everyone should own a Rangey at least once !!
Merc Cosworth
Yamaha FZR1000EXUP
+ many classic cars !!

Just been reading this tread with intrest. I am thinking of getting a 4.0 discovery for the wife. Would the mpg figures be much the same as the RR. Does anyone know of any common faults on the discovery it would be a 2002/03 4.0 auto high ish spec most prob less than 40k milage?
Probably not too far off. The RR will be far heavier though, so you'd thing the Discovery would fair better.
Sure someone with a similar car will be along shortly for more accurate figures....

I deliberately looked for an epsom green/tan leather P38! In some pictures it does look dark & awful but in the metal its very nice. I can understand its a bit country for some though. heres mine...
People either say wow or eugghh thats disgusting when they climb inside, my car though if they dont like it they can catch a bus! I hated the Grey interior in my last one
Go for the V8 every time, the noise is gorgeous and the power so smooth. 4.6 is noticeably quicker from the lights, the 4.0 feels as if it has to overcome the weight and is not as good overtaking. Still perfectly acceptable though
