300 tdi short engine

Right then. I currently am living and working in south east asia. Upon ariving here six months ago i brought a 96 discovery 300 tdi of another ex-pat.
Joys of Joys, today a cylinder knocked a huge hole in the block!
Labour is cheap as chips out here but parts are another matter. There is a main dealer out here but i'd be blown am i going to buy a brand new engine for such an old car.
Now i could get a friend to add it to their freight when they move out here at the end of the year, if i could just get a new engine! The Cylinder head appears OK so i would only require a "short" Engine.
Anyone done this? (brouhgt a short engine), wheres cheap but reliable, how much? Am i knackered or could i maybe drop a different engine, say a 200tdi in cheaper?
