Discovery TDi on shortlist - what to look for

Hello all
Buying something with 6+ seats soon and have a shortlist containing a Disco TDi. Can anyone point me at online resources or let me know what to check. My budget is about 8k so what age/mileage should I be able to get?
Not driven one yet so it may not get to the "checking for faults" stage. I like a car to drive well and this is an alternative to a van/bus (MPV). Also on shortlist are E-class estates and V70's.
Opinions and help please, Oh, and are they really that slow?
