There is a wealth of info available and someone will no doubt have had the problem before.

Sounds to me like a wire has has lost a bit of sheathing and comes intermitently in contact with metal and shorting the system.

Thanks Denis O, it has been relatively long time since my last problem on the car (maybe even a year!) so had lost all my links to sites like that.
