I know that winter is over, but thinking ahead 6 months, has anyone got any experiences of pre-heaters in a Defender? The two companies that make them seem to be Webasto and Eberspacher.

I've never used a fuel burning pre-heater but we've got Kenlow Hotstarts (the 240v elecy type) fitted to both my Range Rover and my missus' TD4 Freelander.

They're brilliant. It gets the engine up to operating temperature in about half an hour and makes the first start of the morning the equivalent of a warm start. Diesel knock and racing fast idle engines are a thing of the past.

You just have to remember that it's just the coolant that has been warmed and not the oil, so you still can't roar off up the road straight away.

I have an Eberspächer D5W in my 88"

  • It was easy to fit having all the right tools at hand. The kit comes with all fixings such as cable ties, etc. I've made a custom bracket to fit it right of the engine on top of the frame (next to the battery in a SII)

  • It takes 15min to heat the engine to 70°C at 0° ambient.
The interieur heats up to 20° in another 10 minutes.

  • The remote control works three blocks in urban areas.

  • Yes, I would buy one again.

They're brilliant until their thermostats fail closed circuit, they boil away the coolant, their seals fail and the coolant spews all over your drive, the insulation melts and they trip your house RCD, so you oversleep, then you have to get back out of your whistle and into overalls to remove them in the blowing snow, then Kenlowe deny ever having sold it to you despite it being under warranty.

I'd never have another one. (I sold the replacement on eBay.) I suggest you fit a thermal fuse to yours.

I know this isn't quite what you were asking after - but just in case your objective might be to achieve interior heat : I have the Eberspacher Airtronic D2, which is their smalletst in-cabin air heater - and could not now live without it (110 CSW TD5)!

The engine pre-heater confers health upon the engine, and gives you instant hot air from the vents when you get in - but they also draw much more current, as they have to pump water about.

I use my Landie as a stationay 'base' a lot for photography - waiting for first light - and so the heater is kept on for three, four, five hours at a time. This is no problem as current-draw is tiny - it's only running a couple of fans and a very tiny fuel pump.

One other slight advantage of an air heater over engine pre-heater - is that when it's snowy, or really frosty - when you come back to your car from work - it's already warm and defrosted - no snow or ice or mist to remove.

Beautifully engineered units, too.

Horses for courses.

Our Freelander has the webasto unit in as standard, I do beleive Eberspacher to be the bees knees though...

Talk to Andrew or David at Automotove Electrical (automotive-electrical.co.uk) who are authorised dealers for both makes and damn knowledgable chaps.

Oh, I see, sorry.

Given Kenlowe's attitude, I certainly shan't be buying anything from them ever again.
