I'm in the market for a Discovery or Range Rover and doing the sums about how much more a creamy V8 will cost me over a TD5 version.

Obviously this depends on MPG figures and I'd like to get an accurate real world figure for each based on my kind of motoring which is made up of

60% low speed town/country work
30% A Road
10% Motorways

My working assumptions based on what I've read is 19mpg for the V8 and 30mpg for the TD5 (both of which would be automatics)

Can anyone give me an idea of the kind of MPGs I can expect from either or both?

15-16 for the V8 and about 20-25 for the TD5.

The V8 will depreciate faster though.

cheers

yeah I'd budgeted for depreciation but you can't ignore the initial £3-4k saving of a V8 over the equivalent TD5

No you can't and that was the route I went.

We had a 2000 V8 ES auto for 5 grand less than an XS TD5 and had a real hoot in it. It was great.
Lost a load when I sold it and spent a load on fuel, but hey ho.

I'd really recommend driving the V8 and Td5 back to back and compare them. The V8 is like driving a luxury car rather than the pretty noisy Td5 (IMHO). Just bought a 2000 Discovery 4.0 V8i ES7 Auto and its a cracking car and so much cheaper compared to Td5. MPG is around 17 at the moment, used to get 23mpg from Td5 so not massive difference for the driving pleasure. Also the V8's tend to get better looked after than the Td5 as they are not used as a workhorse so often.

Two words to consider (or three letters and one word): LPG conversion.

Get your calculator out and it can make a lot of sense - milage over 25,000pa.

interesting views and pushing me in the direction I want to go in if I'm honest (i.e V8)

LPG not really an option as a) only do 7k miles/year and b) want to be able to use the Chunnel

are other running costs (servicing, repairs) comparable in the V8 and TD5?

V8 servicing signifcantly cheaper than diesel and half as often (although I will still have an oil and filter change every 6k on SWMBO's 4.6).
No cambelts to change.
Petrol much cheaper than diesel and as those have said before, not a huge difference in consumption in the real world.
Diesel has no guts unless you are in the market for the latest V6 variant.
The sound of a V8 is just one of those wonderful things in motoring.

It never ceases to amaze me that buyers will pay a premium for a diesel on the basis that it's cheaper to runand live with all the negatives.

It may be cheaper if you're doing 30k per year but it really doesn't make much sense otherwise.

Agreed unless your doing high mileage the premium of a diesel is not worth it. Just to clarify the Td5 engine has a timing chain so belt changing is not required. Also agree to have the oil+filter changed every 6,000/6months (in between Land Rover's recommended 12,000 interval) on the V8 just to keep it sweet for the sake of £50 or so it costs.

Sorry Church. Didn't realise they'd gone to chain on the Td5. Thought it was the same as the 200 & 300Tdi.

Even without that cost it's still a no brainer to have the V8 unless you're in to starship mileage.

We've had a 1997 4.6 and currently have a 2002 4.6 which I understand is the later Thor lump. It's certainly got a lot more go than the older engine and seems a little more economical. 16mpg instead of 14. As Tesco say, "every little helps"

V8 it is then! - you only live once

just seen a nice '03 V8 ES Auto, 1 owner, 52k, FSH, Green Metallic with cream leather (my optimum colour choice) for £13500

the equivalent TD5 would be around £17500 based on what I've seen

£4k in the bank for extra fuel should last a few years based on my mileage

Interestingly I just traded in a 52 Disco same spec as you are looking at for the Rangie. 'Er in doors had a 1997 4.6 HSE for 6 years and last October we traded that in for the Disco. It was a nice car but it ain't a Range Rover so after 4 months we chopped the Disco in for a 2002 P38.

Paid £14k for the Disco and got £11500 trade in against the Range Rover. Bloody expensive 2500 miles but at least she's happy now.

Personally I would go for a Range Rover and the later cars have all the bits including SatNav. It'll be about another £4k but you do get a lot more for your money. I guess that makes sense as the Disco was about £32k new and the RR about £60k.

Good luck with whatever you buy.
