Having had discoverys with both I'd go for the TDI.

Although the TD5 is quieter more economical and significantly more powerful. That power comes in way too late. There's no useful power below 1500 rpm, and it needs 1750 to really get going.

I've found the Tdi to be more economical than Td5 and so have people I know with Defenders (one mate has Td5 which goes as low as 15mpg at fast motorway speeds and never betters 22mpg, my Tdi never goes below 25mpg and will do 30mpg with light use). Agreed at low revs the Tdi is better but once your going Td5 is significantly faster. When Td5 is working its great but when/if something goes wrong its much more expensive to put right. If you can afford Td5 (both purchase price and running costs) then go for it as it feels much nicer to drive overall than Tdi, especially if its primarily road use.

Running costs, that means fuel right?

Hopefully it will be ok, ive not heard of too many nasty stories about TD5'S. Not too sure about the fuel economy that you mention, sounds very low to me. Dont get me wrong i dont expect it to be high but i hear from people that top 20's is fairly easy to obtain. Mine does have a full main dealer history so no doubt while the previous owner has been going there they will have had his pants down at every instance and done anything that was questionable or not. !!

i dont have much experience with defenders but i would have thought that the TD5 would be the better choice been a more modern engine and all, also i belive most of the TD5s have air conditioning whereas the TDIs dont, something worht considering if shes using it in town in summer etc.

Well apart from sanitation...

Sorry that did't read as well on the page as in my mind.

I found that the poor TD5 torque characteristics outweighed it's benefits, plus local specialists have a better understanding of TDi engines. So your less likely to need to see main dealers.

Fuel economy comes from my own experience of running a 1999 Td5 90 hard top, did no better than 25mpg, when you give it some welly its very easy to drop below 20mpg. My mates is a 2001 CSW 90 Td5 only done 22k miles and as I say goes down to mid teens mpg on fast motorway blasts. Overall running costs are higher due to fuel and servicing.

Ok, thanks for the input so far, (any more welcome) after visiting several dealers and having the kitchen table covered in Land Rover magazines and Defender Specification / accessories brochures she has decided to go for the TD5 as its not likely to do much motorway driving and only some light off roading.

if shes not planning to use it in severe off road situations, perhaps the Disco or RR might be a better bet?,thier both very good off road too but better on road and more comfortable.
or has she decided she likes the Defender and thats what she wants?

TDi vs TD5 lol i have a TDi my father the TD5, he loves the low down grunt of my engine and economy and I love his because of the top end power and quietness... it's horses for courses as they say around these parts best thing you can do is test drive as many as possible.
200tdi(my fav) best engine made by landrover IMHO but very agricultral
300tdi ok but not as reliable as 200tdi IMHO (5+ years working on landrovers)
TD5 Great engine but way too revvy for everyday use and too expensive too repair and make waterproof for proper offroading.

Just to let you know, I have just got 29MPG out of my TD5, with an average use tank full. Fair bit of local urban driving and a couple of long journeys across the Derbyshire hills for some warranty work whick got the engine working some.

Have you considered gaving a powerchip fitted. This will sought your problem for sure. It increases both your power and torque whilst increasing your fuel economy too. All this withour effecting any present warranty

I'm now running a P38 diesel - different kettle of fish.

I did ask powerchip suppliers when I had the TD5 if it would improve the low rpm performance, but when I owned one, none of them reckoned it would.
