Hi chaps,

I have a 99 Freelander 1.8 ( no sympathy required )
Lately theres been an odd noise on the move suggesting its something rotational. Its like a dull thump, thump, thump from low speed which obviously increases in frequency as speed is increased and I can feel some vibration through the steering wheel at higher speeds (70+) which suggests something is out of balance maybe. It seems to be coming from the rear end an I wondered if anyone could shed some light on it for me to give me an idea of what bad news I can anticipate.
The rear n/s wheel bearing was replaced 5 months ago could it be the offside failing or merely a wheel out of balance? Tyres are all wearing normally and all nuts secure.
Cheers folks,

Mark.

my money is on a deformed or bulged tyre.

or eliptical brake drums? have you overheated them?

My Landy did both of these, with similar symptoms.

The tyres are all excellent so its not them. Its quite a noticeable noise which seems to be coming from rear n/s.
Interesting about the drums though, straight reploacement job I take it ?

Say you braked from high speed, on a motorway for example or during a long hill, and then stopped with your foot on the brake, you can warp drums in the same way you can do discs. So a drum may be binding/releasing because the disc is no longer perfrctly circular.

About the tyres - if your viscose coupling is getting thick, or if you have an IRD issue, the rear tyres may wear oddly, but this is generally more of a drumming/humming than a thumping.

Have you lost a wheel-weight? I wouldnt have thought you would hear that though.

Other than that, im not much help, im afraid.

Roland.

You say the tyres are in good condition but have you thoroughly inspected them?
As Blue says I would suspect a small egg like bulge either on the tread face or the inner tyre wall. You need to run your hand all the way round and feel for it as they are often difficult to see. You must also roll the car so you have inspected the whole tyre.
