Freelander TD4 ECU upgrade

I am thinking about getting the ECU on a TD4 re-mapped - does anyone out there have any experience of this modification, what are the benefits and has the re-mapping caused any unusual mechanical problems?

I am told that it is a remap of the existing ECU and not a replacement chip.
