Freelander rotational vibration, on slight RH turn
Discussion
Hello folks, I have a 1998 Freelander with a problem that scared me. Its best described as a rotational vibration, on slight RH turn, sounds and feels like the wheel nuts are loose. I had this before and expected a wheel bearing so changed the front N/S hub. I do get some squealing, but dabbing the brakes it goes a way for a bit. I am unsure what to look for next, and don’t want to change parts I don’t need too either. Has anyone else experienced this?
Agree it sounds like the IRD/centre diff. To check if its the IRD/centre diff playing up you should jack the wheel up and be able to spin it by hand, if it doesn't it means that it has locked up and needs replacing. Other symptoms include increased tyre wear with visible scrubbing marks(normally rear tyres first), the steering will "tramline" when driving and also when pulling away with a full steering lock on the inside rear wheel will spin out releasing the built up tension in the drive train.

Thanks chaps, I will look at jacking this up in the morning to try and spin the wheel. do I need to jack both front and rear up on one side?
no, just the front one will do, as with the viscose coupling being, well, viscose, it will (should) turn slowly with resistance.
Thanks for the help folks, I jacked it up and it was all OK, so bought a couple of drive shafts for £15 on ebay, and changed one, on the NS-Front, while there I noticed there was play where the driveshaft fits. Ignore the oil splatter I need to do the clip up with a special tool.
Is this the gearbox that needs replacing or IRD?
I have bought the haynes manual, but covers nothing on this part.
Not even sure what you call this "Driveshaft socket"
