considering one for a runabout, what are they like for reliability, build quality etc? does this model use the Rover K series engine by any chance?

Well I picked it up on saturday, and so far nothings fallen off so a good start and the wifey is happy, so all i need to do now is sell her old 3.9 disco...

The car seems perky enough, no rocket ship and the handling is surprisingly good. on my mates local test track for his suspension kits the freelander does a particular set of bends at the same speed as an mx5 !!!

I've even just spent a hour fitting a genuine part 6 disk cd stacker unit that i picked up new for 80 quid ...... I hate to think how much they are as a dealer fit new !!!!

The heads up on the engines is

1) Older 2ltr diesel lump :- Dependable but a bit slow
2) K-series petrol :- Bit of a gamble but then so's life
3) Later TD4 :- probably the one to have but tends to eat maf sensors ( as does everyting fitted with the bosh maf !!!)

If your not worried about thirst, 2.5 litre v6 is the one to get.

I've had my 2003 V6 for two weeks now, runs like an absolute dream. I'm aware of the problems with the cylinder heads but I have another 18 months of warranty to keep it in trim.

Has anyone ever fitted an aftermarket set of reversing aids?

Be grateful for any help.

Had a 2000 1.8i for several years. The petrols are K series engines and we ate a couple of head gaskets and it was repaired a lot but it did do one hell of a lot of offroading. Got a 2005 HSE TD4 now and its much more refined, its quiet on the motorway, handles pretty well for a 4x4 and its suprisingly good offroad. Hasnt been that reliable though but the service from MJ Fews dealership has been excellent so we havent really got any complaints.

If you get one go for a BMW TD4 engine if you possibly can, the L series diesels are not a patch on it. Avoid petrols!!
