On our way out to a New Years Party my parents Range Rover (02 Vogue, 45,000 miles) decided to throw a wobbler.

Firstly the speedometer supposedly dropped to zero (despite us travelling at circa 40mph), the display then warned that HDC had been selected (it hadn't), and then all warning lights came on.
We stopped the car and turned the engine off in the hope that it may have been a simple software glitch, but sadly not. Initially the car wouldn't restart, but then finally did after a couple of minutes waiting.
The display then informed us that it was in limp home mode, but even this didn't get us home - as soon as we got to a semi-steep hill all power went. Thankfully the car restarted 5 minutes later and was able to make the 1/2 mile journey home (all downhill). Once stopped outside of our house the car had an extremely lumpy idle.

Does anybody have any idea what this could possibly be?

To add icing to the cake my mum decided to take this opportunity to tell us that the warranty had not been extended (supposedly it had never been offered and so she didn't think to take it up with the garage). This leads me to believe that a spanking bill is just around the corner. BUT the car has had its whole gearbox replaced under warranty in the last 18 months. If it were to prove to be a gearbox fault (unlikely, as the were no grinding noises etc) is there any comeback?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

Sounds like alternator to me. Try putting a new battery in it, if it works ok, then consider changing the alternator.

Mine did exactly the same thing and it was the alternator.
