My Range Rover seems to have quite alot of excess play in the steering, which gets more noticable at higher speed. It also pulls slightly to the left.

Would I be right in the thinking that I need a new steering box?

If so, I think that ebay item 4589332799 looks like a good buy. (sorry, I cant seem to get a hyperlink to work??)

Cheers
Ed.

Could be. Need to check the UJ in the column for play.
Also there is a rubber connector in the lower shft this can be come warn and introduce play. Had to do mine about 3 months ago, only cost about £50.

If all that is ok, check the tyre pressures and brake pads. Also a quick check on the diff oil level and swivels.

If that all looks ok try replacing the steering box. Try paddocks, Should be more like £100 +vat.

Just checked out Paddocks, cheers. No doubt I'll be getting lots more from them in the future.

I'm just waiting for my Haynes "Book of Lies" Manual to come through, then I'll have a bash at fixing it.

While we're on the subject of maintenance, what oil do people recommend I should use?? I have a 3.9 EFi.

Cheers

also get a workshop and parts cd of fleabay. Makes life a lot easier when talking to a dealer or looking for parts, or finding out how things are put together.

The recommendation is for 20w50 for a Range Rover.

Also, has anyone got any experience with removing the viscous fan and fitting electric jobbies?? I have heard you can increase mpg by doing this??

The only other problems with my Rangie are the Rev counter doesn't work (althoug the rest of the dash does) and I'm missing half of the drivers seat switch. Any ideas??

Cheers
Ed.

Rev counter works off the alternator I believe. Could be a broken wire or a dodgy connection, belt not tight enough or a knackered alternator. Need to do a bit of connectivity checking on that one.

Seat switches are expensive, around 90 quid a pop and are as fragile as a faberge egg. Keep an eye on ebay as they pop up with bits missing, you could scavenge another broken one to make 2. Both of my switches have broken casings but work fine, so I'll leave them for the moment.

The viscous fan will come on briefly when you start the motor, but as soon as the oil is dispersed it should stop. It will then start again when the oil gets hot locking the coupling.
With normal driving, you probably don't even need a fan; the idea with the 'leccy ones is that you just use them when you need them and can turn them off for wading, so they don't spray water all over the engine.
In reality the viscous fan will only come on now and again, unless the viscous unit is knackered and locked when it will be driven all the time. Unless your fan is kaput, it is not really worth changing, or you have money to burn.

dull steering on one off my rangies was caused by a combo of a shagged damper and bushes that were well past there best(poly bushes are the nuts!)

Probably. it was the TDis that had a 'w' terminal for tachos.

The Tacho is definately fed from a belt powered device, alternator I think, as where I used to live I had to drive through a large puddle after pulling out of he drive. Every morning like clockwork, as soon as I was in the puddle the tacho would die, and the batt charging light would come on. Then 20m down the road there would be a huge belt squeal and everything would right itself.
Theres no puddle where I live now, so didn't bother tightening the belt

That's what I thought, but unless you know of a coil which squeals, I'm sticking with the alternator
