r380 gearboxes

Are all r380 gearboxes the same externally? Can an early one be swapped for a later one and visa versa?

My friend works at a L/R dealership and he tells me that the input shafts are different between the 300tdi and the TD5 gearboxes ,but that can be swapped over as the boys rebuild these gearboxes all the time,hope this helps.
