Range Rover 4.4 V8 is it better than the TD6
Discussion
does anyone own the 4.4?, the TD6 is ok, but it leaves a little to be desired in terms of performance but i supose getting it chipped would improve it greatly, then theres the noise factor, how much thirstier is the V8 in comparison? i would have thought it might be less than you would think as it wouldnt hav to work so hard to move the weight of the car, whereas with the TD6 you do have to rev the engine higher to get it to move, the only thing that conerns me is the residuals seem to be higher on diesels.
My fuel consumption has averaged 17.3 since Feb when I got it, mix of motorway/town/country. Can't compare it to the TD6 because I've never driven one but I had a TD5 Defender 110 before which did 19mpg on the autoroute flat out at 85/90. The Rangie does 19.5 at the same speed and has 25 litres more in the tank, so range is not bad. (Plus it has a few mph in reserve as well;-)
Also the noise, brilliant near the red line and a lovely potent burble when ticking over or trundling along a track.
Th residuals may be higher on diesels but you can get some good deals on V8's, at least you could in Feb when I got one of the last BMW engined ones.

thanks for the help, im still unsure what to do at the moment but i do fancy a black V8 Vouge with the multispoke Vouge alloys, i thought the RR is still powered by the 4.4 BMW V8, i thought this years options were.
TD6
4.4 V8 but boosted to 308(i think) Bhp
4.2 V8 Supercharged
also camel were you going on 17 mpg from the computer?
mine only shows 21 ish

No, the 4.4 V8 is now the Jaguar engine, suitably modified for the RR of course. Likewise the 4.2 supercharged is the Jag engine.
Until they introduce the new diesel V8 though the diesel remains a BMW unit.
I have to say though I have driven a 2006MY RR with the Jag engine and frankly couldn't tell the difference to mine, even though it has a few more bhp. The obvious difference is the 6 speed box.
Both are great engines I think.

I think they may be planning to slip the V8 diesel in later this year:

As far as I know there are no plans to replace the RR with a new RR in the next few years at least.

ah that looks very interesting, i hope they get it right, the TD6 is ok for the moment, i would say if definatly needs chipping just havent got around to it yet as i share the car, i hope they dont change the shape of the RR anytime soon it looks great as it is, but not sure if i will be looking to buy one in a couple of years time again as i have a strong desire to wait 2 years or so and jump in at the deep end and buy a Sagaris, *runs and hides*

V8 Range Rover or Sagaris - that's certainly an interesting shortlist :-) I'd go for both!
All my mpg readings by the way are from the computer, I've never actually worked it out properly so they could be a bit awry I suppose
i wish i could afford both , sadly if im comfortably able to afford 1 i will be happy

A mate has a TD6 RR, which he has chipped, it is more poerful and well worth the upgrade, but it brings the fuel consumption down towards and below that of the 4.4 V8. Pays your money, takes the choice. G

My td6 is 250bhp with 580Nm torque (more torque than new supercharged lump). The overall fuel consumption is better than standard 23.1 mpg with 27 mpg on run. You can't expect to just remap and retain reasonable fuel consumption. Very similar performance to V8 (better in some areas and worse in others), difficult to beat the V8 roar though - but the consumption would kill me

the V8 does sound lovely, the TD6 can sometimes sound a little corse, it may sound strange but the Diesel X5 seems to sound quieter for some reason, although i wouldnt ever think about defecting to the dark side lol.
