Sport Super Charged
Discussion
Hi would be interested in some of your views.
I am and have been a great Range Rover fan (my last 5 cars!! also have the best in the world a 1960 swb 11A) but due to every one going back in for some reason or another decided on a change and have gone for the new Mercedes ML63 AMG. I was thinking it's either the ML63 or go down to a Sport Super Charged, but will the Super charged be the same as all the others.
Opinions please

personally i would take an RR over an ML,X5 or Cayenne anyday, its the original and best, it looks the nicest and its the only one that can actully go off road with any degree of sucess, if you wanted something a little different, www.overfinch.com , the overinh sport looks amazing.
Thanks Yam I agree with you entirely, but just don't want to risk another car breaking down on me. I have been down to Overfinch and tested there L32 converstion which is a beast but is also a price of another car to have done.
The ML has 510 BHP 0 to 60 in about 5 seconds standard and something is telling me the build quality would be better, my farther has only ever driven mercs and i can't ever remeber him having a breakdown. BUT IT WILL NEVER BE A RANGE ROVER!!! and that's the problem i have.

was your last RR a P38? if so i can see why you might be a bit skeptical to buy another because of reliability issues but personally i can say the P60 is an entirly different car, its been great in terms of reliability and im sure the Sport is the same, the Overfinch Sport looks amazing, im sure one of those could be taken higher than the 500 bhp that they say on thier page , have you bought the ML already? if not i would urge you to try the new RR first.
Well as I write this reply my RR has had to be recovered again today something else that has gone wrong.
Yam I thought I had mentioned this is a new shape 03 model luckily still under warranty but what will i do next year!!!!
Lizt I know what your saying, but I've stoped and spoken to at least 8 ML owners and they have all said that they love the vechile.
I have only put the deposite down on the ML i still have time to change my mind but 510BHP is rather tempting. A friend of mine has the new SC sport and loves it but has also said to me he is just waiting for that to break down.

really you have to ask yourself what you really want to buy?, you know deep down what you would prefer, we dont, just honestly the best thing you can do decide what you actully want to drive, for me personally it would be the RR, but i havent had any bad experiances like it sounds you have.
I bought a Disco 3 for the wife, great car really love it, but it has had a few problems. I'm not sure where you get the information about the latest RR's being so reliable. I understood them to be very patchy especially the early ones. A common theme seems to be the air suspension. Check out www.disco3.co.uk. I imagine there is a similar site for the RR, but they seem to share common issues and quite a few of them.
Our Disco 3 has had one air suspension pump and I know other people who are on their third. It wouldn't put me off as I said, it's a truly great car if somewhat flawed. I'd just make sure I had warranty or could extend it.
As to the X5 et al, I'm on my fourth, currently have an 05 4.8is and the Range Rover can't touch it for on road driving. Agreed off road it's not that great, but if that was a real issue I'd buy a cheap 90. I have had the odd niggle with the X5's but nothing major and the service is 2nd to none.
Depends what you want the thing for. If you rarely go off road and don't need seven seats, then the X5, Cayenne etc are head and shoulders better than the Rangie, Disco. If you want to go off road buy a Disco or 90 and keep the change.
The old ML is truly awful IMHO but people still buy it for the mistaken badge snobbery. Whilst the RR could never be classed as awful (built by BMW after all) there are other vehicles in each discipline that simply do it better, so why else would you buy one!

Range Rover's have been owned and built by Ford for quite a while now and the new Discovery and Range Rover Sport have never had any BMW input. My wife has had ML, X5, Cayenne and now the Range Rover Sport which is by far the nicest drive and no problems now in 6000 miles.

I ordered the RRS supercharged…arrives in Jan!!!
My opinion on the others:
BMW X5
Great road car, but not that special and very popular now and the shape getting a bit dated. If had to be a BMW then it would be the M5
Porsche Cayenne
Sorry but personally can not stand the shape, also still aspire to have a 997 and purchasing a Cayenne would basically kibosh that aspiration as the other half would never let me have 2 Porsches.
ML
A friend had an older shape AMG version, this has put me of for life.
RR Supercharged
Great sense of occasion, excellent quality, powerful engine and I really wanted to buy this car; but, it just doesn’t handle, it rolls too much plus it doesn’t feel sporty enough as with the X5 the shape is in its later years.
The RRS is a great car to drive, in fact it reminded me of my hot hatch back days even though it does way over 2 tonnes, the only slight let down is the cabin quality compared to RR .
CY88, fantastic photo’s is that Jersey by any chance?
