Need a new old car to replace our much loved E53 X5 which has sadly been condemned at the last MOT.

Will predominantly be used by my wife for local trips, and I will take it for a decent commute at least once a week.

Went to see a lovely 2011 RR Sport TDV6 HSE Luxury today. 110k miles, great condition and decent history with belt and transmission service done, and the MOT history reads well.

Price just under £6k at a dealer with a warranty. Very tempted.

Will such a car make me want to have a bath with a toaster? I am aware of the crankshaft issues, but as a serial 996 owner am generally an optimist.

Views, encouragement or otherwise appreciated.

Alternatives would be another SUV such as E70 X5 or Cayenne. Or something sensible like an XC60.

We kept our 2010 3.0 RRS until c120,000 miles and it caused us no issues at all. We had an early 2.7 before that, ran it to the same miles and again, no serious problems. Both were well maintained and used for everything including local trips, boat towing and runs down to the Alps. Very conscious we may have been lucky but both were excellent, you can't expect to run one on a shoestring and the road tax is a joke.

After the last one, we swapped over to an end of line XC70 D5 Volvo which did much of what the RR could do in a normal world without feeling potential drama was loitering around the corner!
