As above, go with the auto, although the manual isn't bad
Weak points, EGR, turbo actuator, intercooler pipes. Batteries can cause issues, diffs and transfer boxes can cause issue but they are not spectacuarly expensive if tou buy from bell engineering.
Mileage, well i guess it depends on budget, how many miles you want to cover. I'd probably say 150k if tou want to have some life left.

We had a 2014 SD4 auto and when we swapped it last year it was sitting at almost 120k. It still felt tight and rattle free.
It was one of the most reliable cars we have owned, the only issues we had was the heat shield above the exhaust back box fell off after the bolts pulled though it, an easy fix.

FL2's were great cars and pretty robust overall. Some earlier vehicles had issues with steering racks but I expect most of those will have been fixed by now, and the rear diff pinion bearings were known for failing and causing rear axle whining noises.
For your purchase go for the lower mileage the better, make sure its been well serviced and ideally stick under 100k if possible. The diesel engine is a cambelt motor so make sure this has been or considered for cost when buying as it is often over looked, you see lots of spares of repairs FL2's with broken cambelts.
The post 2010 facelift cars are nicer if your budget can stretch to it, but there's some charm in the robust interior of the pre-facelift car too!

Owned our SD4 auto from 65k miles and just past the magic 100k this week. It has been incredibly reliable over the last few years and besides servicing and consumables it has just needed a tired battery replaced and most recently that split intercooler pipe they are prone to.
I still don't know whether to run it into the ground or shift it on this year (for an early Disco Sport 2.2 or go a bit newer with an XC40?)
Having just put new front tyres on and brakes front and rear last year it may just need a service over the next 12 months.
I don't use it to tow, but it does everything other than sporty driving so well and is great for hauling stuff about.
They are really popular in my rural neck of the woods.
And at this time of year when everything is lagged in mud you really question buying something new and shiny.

MY manual FL2 had done 120,000 miles when we sold, it was great until near the end when the electrics started to fall apart. Wonderful tow car and so stable (often doing over 30mpg towing too), replaced with an auto Disco Sport on a 68 plate, truly bland thing that feels very flimsy...miss my FL2 everytime i'm in it.
