I'm looking at a RRS and they've an offer on at the minute, pick one of:

A free service
£500 off the purchase price
An extra years warranty

The extra years warranty sounds like a no brainer however, its a premium RAC warranty, rather than Land Rover. The chap in the dealership put it in, along with my details, and on his screen, I could see it was valued at £650

Any thoughts on this, as in, would it be any good?

As a general point, you typically pay a premium buying LR approved used. Whats the consensus on buying from LR rather than a non manufacturer dealer? I'm inclined to go LR approved used, simply because of the lower risk of being burned. Is it worth the premium you pay?

When you get to making a claim, the LR warranty isn’t really LR… it’s run by a third party.

Given how slow things seem, I’d be tempted to suggest that you can’t choose between them and would like all three.

It would be worth double-checking what the warranty covers. On the two occasions I've had something fail on a second hand car during the warranty period, the warranty very handily didn't cover the broken item!

I'd be inclined to take the £500 off option, and then put £500 into the highest interest rate instant access savings account that you can find, ready for repair bills!

Take the money. Doubt the warranty is worth much and I doubt they do anything when you take it in for a service you're not paying for whereas £500 I'd tangible.

Have you checked how much the insurance will be?

Thanks for replies all and to address this particular post, I did indeed manage to get all 3 lol

I asked for the warranty to begin with, then went through the 'let me talk to my manager bit' on price and got £500 off. While I didn't quite get the free service, there is only 7k since last service but only a few months away on the time element of the service, so I suggested that it can't really be approved used and then me arrive back at the dealership in a few months as it needs serviced. So it's getting a service before I get it

Re the above post, insurance is £874. Not cheap of course, but not the deal breaker price that seems to be post code specific. I'm in N Ireland.

The car?

I need something with a towbar approved used ideally and my 1st choice was Disco 5 but it's like hens teeth at my budget (£35k)

LR Belfast listed a RRS 2016 HSE SDV6 with 60k miles for £26k which I found alarming as they don't typically list that age. Once I seen it had the electric towbar, I was intrigued. I was working right beside the dealership the day it was listed so I called over.

Negotiated the deal, deposit and car will be ready next week. They are refurbing the Alloys up, a front bumper scratch and servicing it.

Really pleased with the spec. Towbar was the main one but it also has £6k options overall, including the fancy suede type headlining, body coloured side sills, panoramic roof, 4 zone climate, black veneer inserts, noble paddle shifters, incontrol WiFi and the premium metallic paint carpathian grey.

The interior is ivory uppers with the black seats which I really like.

So all in, £25.5k. For here in NI, it's a great price compared to back street dealers with the benefit of LR approved used.

I'm just wondering, at £60k miles, the brake discs should have been replaced at some point? And a new timing belt at this age/mileage?

That's a nice result, and a lot of car for the money.

Our local dealer has been quite candid about how things aren't moving so not surprising that there was some deal to be done.

ETA: my FFRR managed 45k miles on first set of pads. Garage recommended disc replacement but would have fitted pads only if I'd wanted. 60k miles on a set of discs doesn't seem out of the question. Have heard of people needing pads (and presumably discs) much sooner.

cheers

yeah, discs and pads aren't cheap these days as I've just replaced all discs and pads on my BMW X6 is preparation for selling it privately, not much change out of £500 and thats before fitting costs. I'll inspect them on this RRS when the car is finished being prepped and ask servicing if they've ever been done.

After doing a little bit more digging over the weekend, I'm wondering what will happen when the car gets serviced before handover, as promised.

The thing is, we've agreed £25.5k price, 2016 HSE with 60k miles and £6k options. I'm happy of course, and when I put the reg into Motorway the day I called into Landrover, the offer was £20.6k. So I guess that'll be there or thereabouts close to its cap clean price. I would have expected LR to send this car to auction (I've been watching auction listings here in NI for a while now, as I'm allowed to buy as a member of the public over here) so I guess if they did that, they would have got £21k ballpark, which is probably somewhere close to their trade in offer.

Because the car was on a private plate, I've now been able to see that the new owner is in a RRS again, so it looks very much like a trade in vehicle. So maybe due to condition and lowish miles for age, they thought they would get a bit extra via Approved used sale.

This is the thing though. The cars last service was after its 6th birthday but before its 7th. The car is now past its 7th birthday, but not its eighth. Which probably means it still needs its major 7 year service plus the mileage related items. That'll be:

Replace all flexible brake hoses
Renew transfer box oil
Renew locking differential oil
Renew front and rear camshaft timing belts, tensioners and tensioner bolt

Plus the regular service, and potentially new brake discs if they've never been replace

They are also refurbing the alloys and doing a paint correction.

By the time that's all added up, they may have been better off just sending it to auction. It hasn't escaped me that while we've agreed on the purchase and I can see they removed it from sale online, I still haven't got the car. Kind of worried that they might look at all the above, plus the fact they are going to warranty it as approved used, and maybe just think screw it, we'll just get rid at auction. Considering the margin they are going to get on retail price minus approved used preparation spend, versus auction price, they might change their mind.

Dunno, it just seems odd that they would retail this car. When I look on autotrader and filter Approve used, there are zero RRS at 2016 age. So why just the one that I'm buying? Hmmnnnn.....

Have you actually confirmed with them that they will be doing all that as part of the service?

"Replace all flexible brake hoses
Renew transfer box oil
Renew locking differential oil
Renew front and rear camshaft timing belts, tensioners and tensioner bolt"

Perhaps they were just thinking just a quick oil change and check over......

Yeah, that's where my head is that too. Why would they do all that work.

They are offering the standard LR approved used 1 yr warranty followed by a 2nd year warranty, RAC premium plus or something like that. The question then becomes, how can they sell a car with those 2 warranties, knowing that the car isn't serviced to the manufacturers standard. The warranties would be null and void as soon as I drive away would they not. So in order to sell the car as approved used, and with a 2nd year warranty, the car would need to meet the manufacturers servicing guidelines the moment I drive away in it.

I'll be keeping a close eye on how it all develops. I emailed the sales guy today and got no response. Maybe on a day off, but no autonote reply so I might pick up the phone tomorrow to see what's happening.

You do realise the electric towbar will fail, expensively?
If its being sold as approved used it has to have all the required service items completed, otherwise I wouldn't touch it.

Didn't know about towbar issues actually - thats another thing on the list to investigate!

Might turn out to be a bit of a game of cat and mouse on the servicing. If for any reason they don't supply the car with the big ticket service items all complete, I can then remind them that as part of their approved used offer, they are offering the next service free, so I'll just take them up on their offer straight out of the gate so they may as well do it now. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though.

To finish off. Happy with the car and purchase now agreed, picking up next week and they are going to put a fresh MOT on it as the current MOT has expired.

Previous owner had bought it from new from same the dealer I am buying off, and its had all its servicing done there too, so its been their car from the beginning which bodes well for my warranty period.

The big question marks I had around servicing were confirmed as no issue, and its actually had its gearbox oil replaced in 2021 and they serviced it according to the manufacturer spec just this week, so all the timing belts and stuff I was concerned about were all done.

The previous owner kept it in good shape, excellent condition for the year and mileage and the while driver seat can sometimes look a bit tired from a few adverts I've looked at, this one is pretty good.

Towbar was a must for me and it works fine (for now!) and I'm pleased with the spec. Its actually very close to how I would have specced it from the brochure, as I really like light ivory interiors which it has, except the black seats which I think is a great set up as the seats are the hardest bit to keep clean on a light coloured interior.

The bits I wish I had but don't, are the heated steering wheel and the upgraded sound system. The bass is virtually non existent and I would describe it as like listening to the music through a small rear living room speaker for surround sound. Perfectly capable of producing clear and crisp audio, but just lacking in any big depth of sound. At a guess, I would put the frequency range at around 90hz +/- 3db. The system would actually be decent enough if it just had a subwoofer. Infotainment system overall is uneventful, a bit slow. I'm just glad its young enough that its got the heated seats button build into the temperature guage, because a little bit older, and you have to wait for full boot up of the infotainment before you can use the heated seats.

Other than those 2 options, its got a good spec overall. The glass roof is really really nice, and while I personally wouldn't have paid £1k for the fancy headlining (Aliston or something like that) it feels and looks great. I wouldn't have paid £1k for the 4 way climate either, but I'm glad the original owner did. They also added the body coloured door bottoms, rather than the plastic ones, and it does look nice painted.

So overall, when you consider how customisable Range Rovers can be, I was pleased to get a used one that isn't a million miles away from how I would spec it myself - and all for £25.5k with 2 years warranty. Yes, its 7 years old now with 61k but I think its a great deal all things considered and pleased with the result.

I'll put some pics up shortly.

Yes lol, that's me!

As you'll know already then, I'm always trying to get a good bang for buck and I think this RRS is that too. I didn't mention the drive, but it drives very well and when you know the technology underneath giving you that renowned smooth driving characteristic, you feel it's good value for money. It's a lovely cabin, quiet and incredibly comfortable on the move.

Will get the pics up smile

We had the MKI RRS for 4 years before the now outgoing X6 and in my view, I still think that MKI car looks good, despite its 2005 design. So this MK2 I like a lot and I think it retains the MKI heritage in it's overall silhouette.

With the silver wheels and grey paint, it has a more classic type of look compared to some more sporty looking variants and I find that look appealing personally.

Key difference between MKI MKII is the aluminium chassis and behind the wheel, it's a very significant improvement in how it drives. Enormous difference. The interior is a step up in quality too but overall, I like that it's very obvious the MKI and MKII are very clearly related. I like when manufacturers do this, rather than wholesale changes to the design but calling it by the same name anyway.

The interior I love. Previous owner went for the black wood inserts which helps it look modern still and I think it's a good fit

I'll never get the benefit of the big glass roof but I hope the kids like it!

It's hard not to sign on the dotted line when you take one of these for a drive. Yes, the reliability isn't a strength, but you have to weigh that up against the quality of overall product and it's without doubt a very nice vehicle in every way. That's why so many people buy them I guess.

Beautiful car, wish you well with it.
I bought my Freelander 2 as an approved used LR at 4 years old and 17k miles from Charles Hurst LR. It was strong money (for me anyway, even though it was their cheapest used car on sale at that time) having said that it was immaculate and came with 4 new tyres and new discs and pads all round. 6 years on I've still got it, now on 113k and looking and driving great.

This is my 2nd time using them and they've been good. Back in 2012, LR were round the back of the complex and we bought a 3 year old RRS. I think it was £22k at the time. A 2.7 diesel. I'm pretty sure the brand new price of that car was £38k back then, as I remember my surprise when the MKII launched at over £60k. It was a hell of a premium to trade up.

Even when we changed in 2016, the 2013 MKII was commanding very high residuals so we moved to BMW instead.

Overall, on both occasions the car presented very well from LR and well maintained pre handover with good discs, tyres etc.

Funny, when I was in the showroom, I looked at all the new models. Damn, they are so nice and damn, they've went up yet another big price bracket again too!

I’m getting seriously tempted by a middle-aged RRS but it’s knowing when to jump in so you catch the market at the bottom. Insurance for my postcode has gone weird and where a full fat or RRS was £2500 in the summer it’s now down about £1600 - still a lot but I can almost stomach it. I reckon February or March might be the time to take the plunge.
