Offered here is a Tax and MoT exempt "Lightweight"

https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/15121324

Not seeing a lot of 1980 parts on this though.

Do the DVLA still use the points system to retain the registration of a vehicle - adding up for retained items like chassis, powertrain, axles and steering?

ETA yes they do:

What happens if / when you get caught? Taken to court for tax evasion, driving without insurance or similar?
I seem to remember seeing a 107" "Series One" on youtube which tried a similar trick - the running gear was TD5 110".

Eligibility
You do not need to get an MOT if the vehicle was first registered more than 40 years ago and no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years.

<snip>

Axles and running gear
Alteration of the type or method of:
suspension
steering
is a ‘substantial change’.
Plus the engine swap probably knackers it too.

The engine swap doesn't not make it exempt from being eligible for historic status.

Either way, that car is not going to sell for that money. The fact that they have painted it with bed liner will not help at all regardless of the galvanised chassis and the off roady bits.

They are essentially asking very strong money and they have probably fettled it too much to be asking that price.

My car is still fairly standard and I haven't managed to sell it for the advertised £12995 and I personally think that market for Series LRs is on a downward trend.

Looks like a later model 90 chassis to me with a lightweight body and the obligatory bent ID.

Looks like 90 running gear too, so basically full on 90 with a lightweight body. Proper reg and half the price and it would be ok.

AIUI, an engine swap doesn’t necessarily cause a problem for historic tax status but can ruin the MoT exemption.

Agree that the price seems ambitious. Realise it’s horses for courses, but for not much more you’re looking at the very best unmodified ones and the styling when heavily modified is going to polarise views.

It does mentioned it being a later chassis (which again could have exemption implications).

Check the MOT status/history and it it says that it has never had one???

I checked that too and was surprised.
I think somoene else posted - get all the identity abmiguity cleared up with DVLA,probably through the IVA process and there'd be no trouble selling it for a bit less but as it is you could rightly question the provenance of the parts used to complete it.

That’s not a level of risk (or effort) I’d be comfortable with, especially given the comments about it only being driven on a grass field since being rebuilt. If you’d spent the time and money customising to that degree, and were confident that it was indeed tax and MOT exempt, why on earth wouldn’t you get it on the road? After all, it’s not the case that insurance is expensive for classic LRs.

…and what would you do if the IVA result that it had serious issues? Fine if it’s bought very cheap, but they’re not exactly giving it away.

Here's another gem of "uncertain provenance" looks like a lot of work went into building it.
