I've been looking at used Range Rover Sports and Discoveries for a while, almost pulled the pin on a RRS until I got numerous insurance quotes ranging from £1300-£3000. As I currently pay £600 for my X5 I'm just not willing to pay that much for insurance, plus Adrian Flux put me off when they said that many insurers aren't insuring them anymore as they are the most stolen car, I don't want to end up with a car I can't insure in a couple of years time.

So I'm focussing on Discoveries, insurance is coming in at £800 and whilst this is still a lot it's 'bearable', but my question is how common are thefts compared to other similar cars (X5's, Q5/7's, RRS, Defenders etc)?

In my budget I'll be looking at 2020/21 models, I've seen that the newer D300 is down on torque compared to the older SDV6, is this noticeably or is it worth looking at the SDV6 over the D300? Fuel economy isn't much of an issue as I don't do a lot of miles.

Are there any other advantages of the 2021 model over the 2020 one or vice versa. I've heard that the 2021 has better suspension but don't know why, and also that it has wireless charging and apple play which would be nice.

Any help would be appreciated.

The Pivi Pro infotainment on the newer car is a big step forward. Apart from that, I think the earlier interior is nicer. No experience of the D300, but the SD V6 is a great match for the car. I would be inclined to go for the newer one if the budget stretched to it, but don't think you'd be disappointed with the earlier car either.

I have a D300 R Dynamic SE which I've ran from new since late 2021, been absolutely faultless so far with almost 13k miles covered. I test drove the pre facelift model and the main issue with them was the older and much less intuitive mmi system …Pivi Pro a huge step up in terms of graphics, usability and speed prob worth the price alone. The Ingenium v6 diesel engine is a marked improvement also, v smooth but plenty of performance when required. If the budget allows aim for a 71 plate car SE/HSE trim level. Lower spec S cars will feel poorly equipped inside and exterior wise smaller wheels etc. Great car overall, super practical and comfortable for those long journies. I plan on holding on to mine for a good few yrs yet.

Just make certain if you park it on the street or a driveway you put a Denver boot on it.

Thanks for the reply, I'll hang on for a face lift model I think.

Who has quoted you so far ? We have had a Discovery 4 for the last ten years with no problems, but our insurance also is up for renewal ...

I went on the compare websites, I cna't remember who was cheapest tbh. Direct line refused to insure, Performance were £3500 and Adrian Flux £3000

No worries. I should have mentioned those were for the RRS, the cheapest discovery quote was again from confused.com. I don’t try any others as I’ve not found an actual vehicle I’m pursuing yet as the 2021 models are slightly out of reach at present.

My 2017 5.0 supercharged is due on 16th November. Last year was £383 with Direct Line. Cheapest by far. They won't quote this year so paid £570 with Tesco Bank. Cheapest of the lot. Looking at some of the stories here less than £200 more seems a great result.

I've just renewed my wife's Disco with Co Op. £360 protected no claims etc. It's been with Admiral since new. They wanted nearly £700 to renew. Did the usual arguing and they finally came down to £490, still an increase from last year. It's now done 280 k! Brilliant car.

Cheapest quote I could get on a £50k Disco was just over £800. I'm 46 with a clean licence, over 20 years NCB, living in Derbyshire.

Given the latest info in the news I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that - it will probably have been stolen.

On a serious note I can’t get a single company via confused to quote me on a 21plate Defender D250 S. I can’t get my head around that given I’ve been driving 30years with a clean licence, no accidents or claims and live in a quiet little village.

When I spoke to Adrian Flux they said the defender was another model they're having difficulty getting insurance companies to insure, they said it's not just that they're getting stolen, but also parts are getting taken off them frown

I know that’s an issue with the old defenders due to easy access to fixings but didn’t realise the new ones are suffering from it too.

I bet we’ll start to see a huge rise in uninsured drivers!

Faultless over 13k.miles, that's phenomenal.

I ordered one of the first facelift Discos in D300 flavour (HSE R-Dynamic) back at the end of 2020. Took delivery in March 21 and I have covered nearly 30k fault free miles.

The engine is peach. 600 miles to the tank and easily 40+MPG on the run.

In 2016 I owned a 306hp SDV6 RRS, and I can honestly say the D300 engine setup is light years ahead. The MHEV unit fills in toque gaps, and makes it move like a stabbed rat. It’s much quieter and so much more refined also.

The Pivi-pro is amazing and integrates so well with car play. Matrix headlights are next level and the level of refinement is up there with FFRR.

Beware that Land Rover started removing standard items (and making them cost-optional in mid 22, things such as power boot, powered third row seats, fog lights, full widescreen dash binacle.

I can thoroughly recommend it.
