I'm exploring the Defender range and getting bogged down in the multitude of engine and Spec options.

This won't be used for rural adventures/agriculture, purely a commuter/family bus on semi rural/urban roads.

New I think is out of the price range and looks like long leads also. I see under 10k miles gets you something for around £60k.

What is the go to spec and is it better diesel or petrol ?

So much variety and options. I’ve a D250 S Dynamic X 110. I wanted that model for the smaller wheels with bigger tyres. Full length folding fabric roof and black everything. I would say be pragmatic, choose diesel or petrol ( I love my diesel). Then think about what is important to you, clearview mirror, air suspension, full digital dash etc etc. oh yes colour and wheels. Good luck they are fantastic cars.

There is a huge variety of specs as you have found out.

Fuel type is down to your own taste.
4 cylinder diesels are ok, 6 are better.
4 cylinder petrol is decent, 6 is great but thirsty!

Specs are generally from lowest to highest.
S, SE, HSE. X dynamic adds a little to each.

First edition is actually a decent spec.
Has the matrix lights, clear view mirror, decent sound system and air suspension etc.

The one thing I would recommend is not follow factory service intervals.
21k and/or 2 years is way too long.
12k and or 1 year is imho far better for oil.

When I get one, it will get 10k oil changes as I feel 21k on a chain driven engine is asking for trouble later in life.

Not sure if leadtimes are the same for 90s, but we ordered a 110 yesterday. Have been told it will be 3-6 months, but to expect towards the lower end of that. May be a case of pent-up demand/supply issues being addressed or increasing interest rates impacting demand, but it’s quite a change from where I’d thought leadtimes were.

Oddly, another dealer we spoke to this week was still claiming 12-18mths, very strong residuals, over list on used… possibly holding stock he paid too much for?

Friend of mine offered his 2 year old Defender 110 to Land Rover SW London and they didn't even make him an offer. Said that they had too much stock.

Not sure about the condition of the car, so perhaps they were being polite, but it surprised me.
