I thought I got my head around operation of the differential and the difference between the diff lock and diff lockers after seeing Ed Cobleys’ very impressive demo of the systems at Malvern.

For those who didn’t see it he got opposite corners of the vehicle off the ground and showed the ‘lazy’ action of the differentials driving the wheels in the air instead of the ones on the ground. Diff lockers then engaged, power was transferred 50/50 to both wheels on each axle and so away he went again to crush more body panels.

But, thinking about the Terrapod action (and presumably bog-standard vehicles without diff lockers) there was an instance where opposite corners of the vehicles were off the ground and one instance where one corner (of the front axle) was off the ground. If I remember correctly these wheels weren’t spinning as per Ed’s demo :scratchchin:

-So what’s going on?

I would guess that the terrapod vehicles all had Land Rover's new fangled electronic traction control, so it would work out that two of the wheels were spinning and applied the brakes on those wheels until it senses that the vehicle is moving again.

I quite enjoyed Malvern, first LR show I've been to, managed to pick up some parts that I just couldn't live without!

Ah yes...ETC might well explain things

Yep, Malvern was my first LR show too. Thought it was alright. I certainly learnt lots and it did keep me amused for a good part of the day, although it was smaller than I anticipated, but that might be due in part to me turning up at 9am on the first day

....couldn't find a 90 I liked and could afford mind....

Was my first LR show but have been to loads of Kit car shows. Wanted to get some guards and bits of hardware, got the guards ok but no stands selling bolts, wire etc. A little disappointing.

I noticed that as well, plenty of beefy bits to bolt to your Landy but no little bits n pieces like you get at a kit car show. I can see me going to another kit car show sometime to get some bits. Still, a LR is just a big meccano kit isn't it?

Lots of nice 90's there, all were outside my budget though, not that I was looking, I'm more than happy with mine, honest!

sounds like the centre diff wasnt engaged.

a land rover has 3 diffs 1 in each axle and a center one that splits the drive front and rear. the majority of l/r's have a manually locking center diff, the later ones use a viscus diff instead.

then people add lockin diffs they usually start with the rear ( locking or lsd) and then somtimes also change the front axles as well, although that can make steering difficult, as the inside wheel will loose traction
