Our lease Evoque goes back in a few months and decided we need a bigger SUV to replace as the boot space is just not big enough for what we need. Opted to buy a used Discovery Sport as replacement as don’t want to take out another lease. Considered a Q5, but the boot space is hardly much better than the Evoque.

We need the new car to be ULEZ compliant as have to travel into Bristol from time to time. Have heard that a pre-2018 model is the more reliable option and the 2.0l 180ps engine is the one to go for to get balance of best performance and economy.

Can anyone advise if this is the best option as I can’t quite figure out if 2018 is when the more reliable Ford engine was replaced or if this was done earlier? Any other advice related to buying one of these appreciated. Would auto be better than manual etc.

Thanks in advance.

2.2 is the best option but only Euro 5.

If you can pick up a 3 year Disco Sport PHEV they are great. ULEZ compliant and 25 miles on full EV mode for about 75p on off peak electricity tariff. Has been a trusted daily car for young family and we will miss it when my lease is up in a few months.

Budget is £20k, so don’t think it would stretch to a hybrid version.

I have a DS 2.2, 2015. It has the Ford engine. I think that the switch to 2.0 Ingenium engines was made about the end of 2015/early 2016.

I have had the car since December 2016, been really good. I have an extended LR warranty, and I now use a local indy for servicing etc, all good. It is Encap 5 , unfortunately, so not ULEZ compliant. It irks me that when MoT'd the emissions are always lower than the minimum, for ULEZ compliance, thus indicating that Khan is only after my money. Still, I do not plan to go into the London ULEZ area much, although it is only 4 miles away.

You might be better off going for the 2.2 and paying for the emissions zone.

Or go for the petrol but the prices are high and choice limited.

The newer petrols are only 3 cylinder 1.5’s … never knew that until today.

I wouldn't touch an ingenium, had one and it was nothing but trouble. The 2.2 will sound like a tractor but it is a much more reliable unit. I would suggest petrol or a different vehicle!

Thanks for the advice! Looks like a 2.2 is the only real option then as I am hearing more and more horror stories about the Ingenium engine and seeing as the car will mainly be used for short, local trips as opposed to long motorway stints, seems like it's one to avoid at all costs.

I wouldn't be so quick to ignore the Ingenium engine. Our neighbour has a DS with it and I know of a few others too. None have had any significant problems. You hear the bad news, whereas people rarely give out good news. Maybe try for an Ingenium-engined car from a main dealer with a good warranty is the way to go? It will be Encap 6 too.

I dont want to jinx it but we've had 2016 MY discovery sport with the 2.0 diesel, got it at 22000 miles and now its on about 55000.

We've not had a single issue with it, and only things I've had to buy are brakes, tyres and a replacement battery 6 months ago.

I've taken a loan to pay the remainder off before the interest rates went wild, I'm not nervous about having my money in the car for another few years.

Had a DS from new on 66 plate, no issues with the engine in fact I thought it was a peach. It’s the dealers that are ste, find an independent to look after it once you’ve got one.
