Hi all.

I'm looking at purchasing a 2016/17 (up to 33K ish) Range Sport but wondered what your advice may be.

Do I go LR approved or take a punt on any dealer or maybe even private with an approved look over?

V6 or V8?

Best model?

Or, do I steer clear as many have said to me?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I was in a similar position but a year so newer and a FF, not that that bit matters. I chose a main dealer as I got a good deal, 2 years warranty, 2 services in the price (which was very similar at the time to non MD). One of the biggest drivers for me was that cars of the age I was looking at, I asked myself the question as to why they were outside of the main dealer network?
My reasoning was, cars in the network weren't so bad that it put owners off the brand and they had chopped them informed newer ones. Ones outside of the MD network could have been dogs that the owner had had enough of and wanted to chop into another brand. That could be utter tripe of course.

Had mine for 3 months, 1 niggle sorted by LR assist in the first week (battery problems due it it being stood on a forecourt) and the SIM card reader isnt connecting to the internet for live traffic updates (will be sorted at the next service, cant be assed taking tin before)

It's a fantastic car, buy one.

I’ve said it before on here: don’t place much weight on the approved used land rover warranty.

I’ve had issues with it, as have several friends. It’s a lovely reassuring Land Rover warranty when they talk about it when you’re buying, but when it comes to claim time rely it’s all down to the separate company that provides it.

If you do get one, make sure you get/undertake a thorough inspection a couple of months before the warranty expires and then log any potential issues with the dealer before the warranty expires. If they’re not logged and the policy runs out, even if that’s due to dealer servicing lead times, don’t expect much help from JLR.

Don’t have high expectations of getting a courtesy car either if it’s going to be off the road for an extended period.

That said, neither of my more modern land rovers (Defender and FFRR) have been massively unreliable, just a few pre-existing issues on the approved used one should have been spotted and addressed by the supplying dealer. I would buy any other approved used BUT care is needed to avoid getting caught out by a warranty/service that isn’t anywhere near as good as for a new vehicle.

Conversely, I have had a Jaguar S Type and XF, and a LR DS consecutively, each year since 2007 covered by the JLR extended warranties. I've made several claims eg for three, yes three, separate new gearboxes for the S Type, all d/w by a JLR MD, no problem. Cost a bit over the years though!

My preference would be the V8 over the V6 and the inspection will only tell you how the car is behaving on that day. V8 is a bit less crank snappy than the V6. Turbos would worry me on the V8 as that is a hefty bill to change those.

I mean, its a Land Rover, so it will go wrong and just remember they are incredibly complex cars and have a justifiably poor reputation. At least the 8Sp box is pretty good.

2016/17 might get the LED Display for climate, which looks nice, but not straight forward to use. Later entertainment kit is better too, but slow to boot up. Nothing unusual really for LR.

Best model: 4.4 V8 Autobiography. Go the whole hog and get the full fat RR rather than the Sport. Has more torque than the RR Sport anyway and is much more cossetting.
