I’ve been looking at an SDV6 RRS but managed to scare myself off with stories of crankshaft and engine failures.

I’ve seen a 2017 3.0 V6 petrol and, despite the MPG, I wondered if this engine suffered from the same crankshaft issues as the diesel?

Does anyone have any info on this model? It seems to be rather rare and expensive on fuel but if it was more bullet proof than the diesel then I’d be happy suck it up.

Many thanks in advance.

The diesel TDV6 is a very good engine and still in production in the new Ford Ranger. But it is true they do suffer crank snapping issues. Some try to dismiss it, but a quick Google will show you far more cases than you'd ever beleive.

The petrol V6 is IMO a really cool engine. It is cleverly made from the AJV8 engine. Although some try and make fun of it for this, which is just silly really. The only real downside is it'll use more fuel than the diesel and is only marginally quicker. I've not personally heard of any issues with this engine. It is used in the F-Type, F-Pace and Velar too.

As an alternative, the 2.0 four cylinder petrol was available for a while. Has 300bhp and even in a D5 felt perfectly adequate.

At the time I always wished I’d got the SDV6 but if I was buying out of warranty I think I’d consider it over all the others as generally it has very good reliability. I’d probably take the V6 petrol in preference but I expect performance and fuel economy are pretty similar. When I drove the P400e with the 2.0 petrol in it I got the impression there was some kind of fake noise generator as it sounded pretty good in that application, far better than in the Disco.
