Looking at the ad for a Disco 2, TD5, manual, low miles 2004 model relatively local to me at three and a half hours away.
Would be a replacement for an aging Volvo 940 Estate, for when I'm carting family/dogs/stuff about so not huge annual miles. I have something else for when I'm alone or single passenger .
Any reason why I shouldn't go for it? Haven't a chance to view but MoT history, pics, description seem OK
Thanks

Any mention of rust on chassis?

The back half of the chassis can rust badly which has been the demise of many examples.

Otherwise, check everything works.
If it has sunroofs, do they leak? Chances are they will.

Fuel systems can leak air in, you’ll know of that by the fuel pump whining as it purges the air.

They are fantastically slow, even a healthy one is slow.
They can be tuned easily to give better performance.

Rust...

Never buy a car based on mileage. A low mileage, poorly maintained car is probably going to cause you more problems than a well maintained high mileage example.

Buy on condition.

The D2 is a nice car but bear in mind it's over 18yrs old, so there will be niggles.

Seller says "no rust", chassis "part undersealed" which is a slight worry, why part, is it covering something.. Sunroof "did leak" but resolved apparently, believe there's some staining to roof headlining. No mention of corrosion on any MoT, past or present except brake pipes.
Auction currently at £4K

It’s in that middle bracket of cars that aren’t quite shed money and loaded with issues.
But isn’t a mint example that’s unlikely to give much hassle.

It’s average with the potential for going either way.

Might be worth joining a disco 2 owners group and seeing if there are any cars for sale on there that are in your budget and aren’t a 7 hour round trip in case it’s not quite as described.

Thanks, I'm in no hurry in reality, I was just perusing the ads and spotted this particular vehicle.
I'm out in the sticks (actually a few fields past the sticks) so everything is a journey.

To add to previous posts I think buying the best you can find and afford applies here.

I spent £8k on a this D2. Friends said, 'how much'! But my thinking was that for a 2004 Landmark auto, 88k on the clock, with 1 previous owner who was a Land Rover tech at a dealership, who'd kept on top of everything was actually good value. Its easy to loose a couple of grand getting stuff fixed and then chase until you run out of time and patience. Things like sunroof drain channels, air suspension bags/compressor, rear chassis rot, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, decent tyres, three amigos, auto gearbox XYZ switch faults, oil seepage into the injector harness is painful if the car has been neglected.

My thinking is that if the car has been converted to coil springs it suggested that the car wasn't worth spending £200 for air bags. If the compressor had gone then the PO probably had failing air bags and decided not to fix it, which caused the failure in the first place etc etc. Therefore I would never look at one of these at all.

Having said this - I, and more importantly my other half, love our Disco 2. It drives like a Landy should, I can maintain it and fix the easy stuff, and is the best workhorse for tip runs, 7-up pub outings, holidays or just pootling around the valley.

Update: I was outbid at the last second. Asked seller to let me know if the sale falls through as they often seem to do.
Will try and find a good web site for the Disco 2.

D2BC is the forum to go to.
I had a 2004 Td5 Landmark manual from 3 years and 33000 miles to 14 years and 165000 miles.
I loved it but it did have plenty of issues that I was able to diy otherwise it would have ruined me financially.
It had:
2x clutch and dmf
Clutch slave and master cylinders.
Hp fuel pump.
2x fuel pressure regulators
2x exhaust manifolds (they warp on tuned td5s)
4x suspension air bags (only air on rear)
Steering box and drag links. Power steering pump
Cylinder head gasket, then cracked cylinder head which needed an exchange head and another gasket.
All suspension bushes.
Watts linkage bushes
4x shocks
2 front springs.
Rear chassis was starting to go rusty despite wax oiling it several times.
In the end it was becoming unreliable and I can't be doing with that.
Replacement was a 4 year old Freelander 2 Sd4 which I have now had 5 years and just about to turn 100000 miles. Way more reliable, 2 intercooler hoses and 2 tailgate switches are all its needed apart from routine servicing and tyres.
Apart from the much smaller boot and lack of 7 seats it does all the disco ever did with better economy.
Tows a twin axle caravan effortlessly too.
I still miss the Discovery 2 though, its a fantastic practical family car, personally think its one of the best looking landrovers ever made, (taking second place to a Series 2A 88" with a canvas top!) If a low mileage cherished example came up I'd be very tempted to have another one. Japanese import V8?

Well I didn't get the one that was local to me (3 hours away), outbid. Seller did say he'd contact if sale failed but no response since so assume gone.
Has turned my head though so if another comes up I know a lot more about them now. Including how to replace a headlining and many other youtube videos.
Thanks Guys

Further follow up and closure.
Winning bidder failed to turn up so I got a "second chance".
Low mileage probably genuine although drivers seat dishevelled, headlining falling out, scratches to corners. Car needed a damn good valet and the afor mentioned repairs as well as 4 tyres.
Chassis seemed sound although a little bit of relatively fresh underseal on "chassis rails" to the rear but probably sound under that. No corrosion on doors etc.
Engine sounded like a typical old clattery diesel. Quite comforting having driven Series 2 & 3 Landrovers for work many many many years ago.
Seemed a decent enough car for a workhorse or needed £1000+ spending to make a decent road/family car. I did feel immediately comfortable in it spatially.
Did I buy it?
Afraid not, in my non LR knowledgeable mind it wasn't worth the asking price and he didn't seem keen to drop.
Offer accepted on a newer Volvo.
Once again guys, thanks for the guidance. Might still buy one in the future.
